A North Carolina student has been found dead a day after she went missing while hiking a mountain in South Africa, authorities and her “devastated” family said Monday.
Brook Cheuvront, 20, was reported missing Saturday from Table Mountain in Cape Town — where she was studying — after she stopped responding to friends and couldn’t be located on a tracking app, a rep for SANPark, which manages the mountain, told CBS News.

"SANParks said suggestions that there are “growing concerns of crime” at Table Mountain are “speculative and may cause unnecessary alarm which undermines worthy and successful efforts,” in a social media post on Monday."
Pretty, blond, young white girl in SA?
And they expected what else exactly?
I have some neighbors who are white South Africans. They just brought over their elderly mother and sister who was caring for her. There is no one left from their extended family. They have all emigrated - and they swear they will never return.
I am eternally grateful that my daughter is a brown eyed brunette with very olive skin. When she was there for her semester abroad, they thought she was half black, so they didn’t bother her. I was never as anxious before or after those 6 months. So much hell, and I never want to go through that again.
There was another time when she was stranded in India during a monsoon and trying to get back to the US. That was the other time I was super worried, but that was only 10 days, not 6 months. She was a few years older and wiser at that point.
I feel for this girl’s parents. How awful.
A lot of young White girls of her age are profoundly naive about the realities of the world and some of the animals which inhabit it.
It reminds me this killing of two Scandinavian girls in 2018 in Morocco.
Or this killing of bicyclists in Tajikistan.
And they expected what else exactly?
It happened, just as I suspected it would. 👎
there is NOTHING in SA worth yer life... nothing.
They aren’t naive. They are ignorant and/or stupid. And so is every adult in their immediate lives as well.
There is also the issue of weather. There has been a freak snowstorm in SA, with videos of lions walking around in it. And this was on the plains. On mountains I can imagine it being pretty bad. Youtube “south africa snowfall”.
Would have been safer in North Korea, or Afghanistan.
It used to be safe for White people, male and female, to hike alone in South Africa. But Leftists, particularly female Leftists, could not accept the cost of that safety (putting felons in jail), and so, now, no one can hike alone there (or, for that matter, in much of the US).
They made her bed - and that was their right. But it would have been nice of them to warn people like her.
The State Department says it’s a Level 2 “Exercise Increased Caution” country. I’m kind of surprised her parents let her go to school there. I assume they were paying the tuition and could have said no. That said, I am truly sorry for those parents. They probably thought they were giving their daughter the adventure of a lifetime. Instead, she was murdered.
A friend of an extended family member emigrated with his family from SA about 20 yrs ago and they love it here. They feel lucky to have escaped.
If her parents paid for this, they are on the hook for this level of stupid outcome.
South Africa is a terrible place to be if you care about living as a white person.
I have spent time in Level 4 prohibited areas for all US Federal employees. You need to always be on guard and with safe people familiar with the area.
In 2009, my wife and I went to South Africa for a vacation. Among other places, we spent a week in Cape Town, during which we hiked up to the top of Table Mountain. The approach to the mountain was through a botanical garden. We were warned about possible crime before setting out. There were some very tall ladders we had to go up near the beginning of the trail, which was precarious and not well marked. The maps we had were equally poor. We finally found other people on the trail who were acquainted with the route. They helped us find the trail we were supposed to be on, and we eventually found our way over to the cable car, which we eventually took down the mountain. We were relieved when we finally arrived at the restaurant next to the cable car. It was not an enjoyable hike. My wife and I have done a considerable amount of hiking in Washington State, so we aren’t inexperienced hikers. Perhaps the trail has been improved, but I wouldn’t recommend anyone hiking this trail unless they were with someone and well prepared.

They have no common sense. The world is a jungle.
I expect the family will soon release a statement condemning anyone who tries to make this about race.
Why in the hell do these damn kids go into a place like South Africa!!!
