At Darnell's sorority fees alone can cost around $30,000 a year.
For those joining the sorority for the first time a lump payment of $4,581 is charged in the fall semester for new member fees, followed by another $4,441 in the Spring semester.
On top of that are ‘dues’, fees paid to cover the activities of the sorority. These are around $1,400 every month.
For members that choose to live in the sorority’s mansion a fee of $10,422 is charged each of the two semesters....

Old row at Bama. Better have the right house, income etc. They check it all during rush. That said, my daughter had a great sorority experience at Bama, They do have required study hours and min gpa to stay in.She graduated in 4 years with chem E degree and finishes her phD in biomedical E at University of Minnesota this fall.
Most sororities at Bama required 1 year living in the house.
I don’t think 10,000 for a year of housing on campus is a lot.
Thanks for the history lesson. One question - do you think most fraternities were more rowdy, ill-behaved, etc. in the 1980s and 1990s than they are now? Or is it worse now?
I was AGR at Colorado State. When, I pledged (1983), there was hazing, to a minor degree and a hell week which basically involved significant lack of sleep.
Today, that is strictly forbidden with no initiation period.
Best part was the Little Sisters which were like a women’s auxiliary to the house. Many were sisters to my frat brothers. They organized dances, were secret Santa’s and etc.
Several marriages resulted from this close interaction. Sadly, this does not exist today.

I don’t have a ton of hard evidence. Based on a few data points, they are just as rowdy and ill-behaved as ever. But…
…they are under a microscope. Colleges are openly hostile to fraternities - aside from the drinking problems, administrators speak of elitism and racism in fraternities.
As a result, open parties are a thing of the past. There are guest lists. And therein lies the problem.
Today, there is little transparency into what goes on. It was better IMHO when there wasn’t such a repressive atmosphere- we KNEW which houses were cool, which were snobs and which were football player rapists.

Candidly, if I had kids in college I’d advise them against joining a fraternity. The risks of getting slimed by no fault of your own is yuge.

When I was in the frat, there was a girl’s auxiliary group called the “Little Sisters”
There was nothing sinister or wrong about the young ladies in this group. It was simply an opportunity to participate in an Agriculture fraternity that enjoyed the same things that they did. We were in the same classes as these girls and enjoyed the same Ag livestock lifestyle that they did through interactions of FFA and 4H.
Today, there are female Ag sororities that function much like the fraternities.
