Malcolm Gladwell in his book "The Outliers" states that the reason Asian kids consistently outperform western kids in international math tests is because of the cultural attitude these kids have towards solving a math problem, or any task that requires patience and effort for a long period of time.
In China and other Asian cultures, there is a logical pattern to learning math based on a confidence and expectation that if we apply enough effort the problem is solvable while in the West, kids believe their ability is innate and can't be changed or influenced.
Malcolm's theory is that the reason for this difference in attitude has to do with the historical agriculture practices in both cultures, where the rice growing Asian culture had a different lifestyle for thousands of years that required consistent hard work which translates in the today's attitude of their kids when trying to solve a math problem.

Because they’re better at it?
Chinese, particularly educated ones, worship at the alter of STEM.
Its greatly enhanced by 80 years of Chinese Communist scientific-materialism - and the West’s own hyper-consumerism
One could say from that materialist perspective, for Chinese the only thing that seems “true” around the world and across human development. STEM must be cultivated with discipline.
As a personal belief/philosophy, its at least better than worshipping free-will, narcissism and elevation of the individual and one’s emotions which is the fashion here in the West.
Of course children will receive this.
Well said. No, really ... that sums it up perfectly. There are no real problems so they make them up, and get VERY, VERY ANGRY if anyone disagrees with their pretend problem.
A good friend is Japanese-American. He remembers telling his mom, while he was in high school, that he got a B in Calculus.
“B? Why only B? You not work hard? You do better next time or you’ll be in big trouble!”
Asian kids word harder. I am up close to such families. Asian kids by and large study all the time, do not lay around on phone or social media, do not engage in sports, MAY take up music - mainly orchestral instruments like violin, cello or flute, do not follow daily news, read a lot of books (fiction, non fiction, classics, philosophy, science, science fiction, etc)
Many kids attend public schools and then are home schooled in addition for enrichment. Home schooling now is organized. Actual texts, programs, guest lecturers. So they are super prepared for the work and the standard tests.
The data I just looked up showed comparable rates of suicide between teens in Japan/Korea and the USA.
IOW they try harder.
Asians and Indians.......Look who dominates the National Spelling Bee
Asian parents + IQ norms for them.

Why does the mother have those sideburns?
Parents expect over achievement from their kids. Plus, they’re instantly smarter.
Of course, many Asian cultures (mostly Chinese) CHEAT LIKE HELL, and don’t think that’s a problem. That could be indicating higher grades. (Much like Biden “winning” the Presidency.
Indians don’t have high IQs like other Asians.
This was known over fifty years ago.
The disease, though, is especially prominent among the singer-“songwriter” crowd.
You actually read it!
Here’s another one for you:

And if the school or teacher doesn’t give homework, the parent does. They have all sorts of extra workbooks.
love it
Sadly, this gap will grow wider for many reasons. Math (at least in the U.S.) is deemed racist. As a retired teacher I can confirm I was told this. I also was told not to correct their errors because it would make them feel bad. As a retired engineer (also) I told them that the people who died from collapsed bridges and houses as well as planes falling from the sky (Who knew I was a prophet?) Would feel far worse. If they could have tarred and feathered me, they would have. There is a limited number of hours in a day and if those hours are filled with nonsense, agendas, gobbledygook and global idiocy, there are fewer hours to devote to actual learning. The U.S. has adopted the shallow approach to learning, removed memorization and encouraged dissent and disruption at every level. This dumbing down of America continues at a breakneck pace. DEI (Didn’t earn it) doubles down on previous generations of affirmative action. No borders and incompetent professionals means we are importing anyone with a modicum of intelligence as a replacement population as our own kids are denied jobs because of their gender, ethnicity or Christian values. Some medical schools won’t graduate you unless you perform at least one abortion in school, disallowing Christians from becoming doctors. I could go on, but you get the gist. The future is bleak, my friends.
