Why do Asian kids outperform Western kids in math?
YouTube ^ | Book published in 2008 | Malcolm Gladwell

Posted on 09/21/2024 7:48:21 AM PDT by grundle

Malcolm Gladwell in his book "The Outliers" states that the reason Asian kids consistently outperform western kids in international math tests is because of the cultural attitude these kids have towards solving a math problem, or any task that requires patience and effort for a long period of time.

In China and other Asian cultures, there is a logical pattern to learning math based on a confidence and expectation that if we apply enough effort the problem is solvable while in the West, kids believe their ability is innate and can't be changed or influenced.

Malcolm's theory is that the reason for this difference in attitude has to do with the historical agriculture practices in both cultures, where the rice growing Asian culture had a different lifestyle for thousands of years that required consistent hard work which translates in the today's attitude of their kids when trying to solve a math problem.

I think I see average Chinese and dot Indian people educating their average children with better snd more demanding math skills than Americans educate their average children.

Discipline and work ethics. They are not any more intelligent than today’s kids in the U.S. American kids have gotten spoiled and lazy. The scores have been dropping for a long time. In addition to blaming parents in the U.S. I blame the public school system where they let kids slide. Go to a store and buy something with cash. If the register doesn’t tell the cashier what change to give back, most of the kids will resort to the calculator on their phone, because they can’t figure it out in their heads. Parenting has gone down hill as well as public schools.

In Chinese, this is more obvious: er shi, “two-ten” is easily understood as 2 x 10 = 20. The English word “twenty” doesn’t spell this out so clearly.

.....

So does Italian.

The concept is simple. Children are not a year ahead because of descriptor words.

Those are simple concrete concepts.

They are a year ahead because of better and more thorough education.

Left to explain away the fact that they simply DO NOT want American kids well-educated.

Memorization and rote work are easy compared to things like new product development. The creative process is not something you are going to do by “driving it into them.”

..........

Creativity is best served with understanding of basics.

Look at all the Creativity that left our shores when our factories moved overseas.

Being on the factory floor spurs innovation. Shade tree mechanics and self taught engineers spark innovation. . Rarer even in robotics..

Creativity for the sake of Creativity is not much..

The human brain needs problems...or it will find them.

Ahh, yes. Selective outrage.

Meaning, it's okay to say blacks are better runners, better dancers, better rappers (like that's a positive but I digress), better this and that.

But Katie bar the door if you say whites are better at ANYTHING. Anything at all. Oh, except racism, white supremacy, and hate.
