Protonmail is the way to go. Based in Switzerland. Privacy focus. They have other excellent tools like a secure cloud storage, password manager, calendar

Not gmail.com
One of the only ones that does not require you to jump through hoops if you sign on from a different location. Does require a complicated password but have used it around the world with having to go through that annoying "for your security we need to send a pin to another email account or your cell phone" bit.
