Vodka is perhaps the spirit with the least personality. It doesn't bring much by way of tasting notes to the table, but when you're looking for a clean, clear liquor to serve a boozy kick without dominating the flavor profile of your drink, vodka is what you want to reach for. Around the world, vodkas are made from grains, potatoes, sugar cane, and even maple sap. There are some pretty cheap ones on the market, leaving you wondering which of them are worth the buy?

Bottom shelf is a term that can come with some stigma, but here we use it to simply mean affordable. If you don't want to spend big bucks on fancy liquor, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice quality. There's quite a spectrum on the bottom shelf, so we've spoken to some experts to get a sense of the best options at the low end of the price range. They all agree that vodka isn't something you need to spend a lot of money on.

I’ve heard at least six months but a year is better. This from a friend who’s doing it. She’s six months in, and says her first batch is really good.

I very recently stumbled upon Svedka GIN. At a PA State store, just under $10, and I'd say a bargain at twice the price.

As a recovering alcoholic, none of those are “bottom-shelf.”

Scrounging up change to buy a fifth of Crown Russe for the day? That’s bottom shelf living.

I let it go a year.

I get my vanilla beans from here for MUCH cheaper than the grocery stores, and they are nice and fresh and moist.

These vodkas are not really bottom shelf. There are some true bottom shelf vodkas so bad that you might look for “ veterinary use only” on the label.

I hated State Stores in the 70’s. The one in Erie I went to was like a Soviet DMV office.

That’s bottom shelf living.

Just reach for the Aqua Velva in the refrigerated case.

I actually saw that in a store.

Well. That’s a a strong rec for Harris organic.

But the real go to vodka authority to answer the question is:
“What does san fran nan stock on her gummit jet?

I’ve been a fan of Luksusowa for a good 15 years. My wife was a fan of Chopin, but those two are opposite ends of the price spectrum for vodka.

Monopolowa is another inexpensive option.

Buy Kirkland if you like to have a headache before you finish your second drink. Kirkland brands are all just a little bit crappy. They had an assortment of craft beers that cost less than a home brew would cost. I was worried about it for a moment because I like to brew my own beer. I took a drink of the pale ale and poured the rest of the bottle onto the ground. Their premixed margarita gave me a headache so I stopped buying it. I love their prices in large quantity bottles but I absolutely will not buy their brand.

Or, alternatively, just reach for one of these...
