WAR DEPARMENT.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 -- 8:10 P.M.

To Maj.-Gen. John A. Dix, New-York:

A dispatch from Gen. GRANT, just received, gives a statement from the Richmond Examiner of this morning, that JOHN MORGAN was surprised and killed, and his Staff captured, at Greenville, Tenn., yesterday. An unofficial dispatch, received by this department this morning from Lexington, states that Gen. GILLEM had officially reported the surprise and defeat of MORGAN at Greenville; that JOHN MORGAN was killed and his Staff captured; from 50 to 100 rebels killed, 70 prisoners taken and one gun captured. This report being confirmed by the Richmond Examiner, there is no room to doubt its truth.

In honor of the capture of Atlanta, GRANT yesterday ordered a salute to be fired with shotted guns from every battery bearing upon the enemy.

Nothing has been received by the Department since the 4th instant, nor anything south of Nashville, on account of the derangement of the telegraph lines by the prevailing storm.

No movements of importance have taken place in is Shenandoah Valley.

REPORTS VIA CINCINNATI.

CINCINNATI, Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The Commercial of this city publishes the following dispatch:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Monday, Sept. 5.

The following official telegram from Gen. GILLEM was received this evening;

BULL's GAP, Tenn., Sunday, Sept 4.

To Gen. Tilleson:

I surprised, defeated and killed JOHN MORGAN at Greenville this morning.

The killed are scattered for miles, and have not yet been counted, and probably number fifty or one hundred.

I have about seventy-five prisoners.

Among those captured were MORGAN's Staff, with one piece of artillery and a caisson.

The enemy's force outnumbered mine, but the surprise was complete.

Great news- so current. It must get old somewhere— all this inaccuracy.

My great, great, grandfather was fighting in that area around that time. He went missing in action around November 13, 1864, was transferred to a Confederate Prison in the Salisbury, NC area where he died and was buried in a mass grave. His wife died in April 1865 without ever knowing what had happened to her husband. Six children survived them.
