Philly woman accused of using hands-free driving in crash that killed 2 people, charged with DUI homicide

A woman accused of driving under the influence used a partially automated driving system when she struck and killed two people on a Philadelphia highway in March, authorities said.

Dimple Patel, 23, faces multiple criminal charges, including DUI homicide and involuntary manslaughter, Pennsylvania State Police announced in a release. Patel turned herself in to police on Tuesday.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on March 3 on I-95, police said. Two cars had pulled over to the left side of the highway, with one presumably assisting the other. As one driver exited his vehicle and the other stood nearby, Patel rear-ended one of the cars, triggering a four-vehicle collision that resulted in the deaths of both men, who were identified as Aktilek Baktybekov and Tolobek Esenbekov.

Investigators found that at the time of the crash, Patel was using Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving feature with adaptive cruise control activated.

“No partially automated vehicle technology should ever be left alone to perform the driving tasks that are required to safely navigate the roads of the commonwealth,” the Pennsylvania State Police said in the Tuesday release. "While the advancements in technology are immense, always strive to maintain proper control of your vehicle."

Ford’s BlueCruise system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on specific highway sections while the system manages steering, braking and acceleration, using external sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings. A driver-facing camera is supposed to ensure that the driver remains attentive and can take control of the vehicle at any moment.

Patel's defense attorney, Zak Goldstein, told NBC News on Wednesday that the role of the BlueCruise system in the crash would be critical to the case.

"I cannot believe that a car salesman would lie."

Hahahaha..

Car salesmen are our natural enemies: they lie when they breathe - If you take less than a full day to negotiate the price down on the car in their lot, you've thrown away thousands of dollars.

Most salesmen get commissions on their sales, so it's their lifeblood to sell that car at the highest price they can - and add tons of undercoating, extra cost paint finishes, etc. etc.. And they know less about the car you're interested in buying than most ten year olds (or even anything about their engines, drivetrains, accessories..).

Bonne Chance, Buddy!

I cannot believe that a car salesman would lie. So I can only conclude that the United States has invaded and annexed Hermosillo.

After WWII the United States owned the private aircraft market. What killed it and ended a dozen companies and thousands of highly paid jobs was liability. The courts found that the manufacturer was responsible for every feature working regardless of age or maintenance.

Based on the history, it’s amazing a car company would even attempt to create self-driving cars. This is a feature I expect to vanish because of lawyers.

Nope, they aren’t. That’s why they are clearly labeled as Dimple and a coworker.

It was the best photo I could find that was Dimple Patel of Pennsylvania.

There is more than one Dimple Patel.

Who knew?

You should look at your point a little differently.

Cars didn't vanish. Auto manufacturers successfully lobbied state governments to pass laws that placed the primary burden of liability on the driver, not the manufacturer. Thus, the whole industry of auto insurance was born.

"Self-driving" cars will be feasible only if the auto industry can successfully convince state governments to pass laws that indemnify the manufacturers of any liability in the event of a defect or malfunction. I don't see that happening any time soon.

[> I’m pretty sure that Ford was probably built in Mexico or Canada. <

I went to a Ford dealership about a month ago to look at their Mavericks. I told the sales guy I was only interested in one built in the United States or Canada. No problem, the sales guy said. They’re all built in the United States.

I left him and went browsing the lot. Every Maverick there was built in Hermosillo, Mexico.

I cannot believe that a car salesman would lie. So I can only conclude that the United States has invaded and annexed Hermosillo.]

Lol.

Lots of American built cars on the road to choose from. Kia, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Toyota, Honda to start with.

Hyundais are all made in South Korea. Cheap because of cheap labor.
