Novel low-dose 3-in-1 blood pressure pill significantly outperforms standard care, study shows

New research shows that a treatment plan based on a novel combination of low doses of three anti-hypertensive drugs in a single pill—known as GMRx2—was superior to a high-quality standard care treatment plan at lowering blood pressure in patients with uncontrolled hypertension.

Results of the 'deliVERy of Optimal blood pressure coNtrol in afrICA (VERONICA)-Nigeria' trial, were presented today.

The GMRx2 treatment plan involved a once daily pill containing telmisartan, amlodipine and indapamide at a quarter, half or standard doses. The standard care treatment plan began with monotherapy, followed by dual and triple combination therapy, and was typical of hypertension guidelines for many countries.

After 6 months treatment, home systolic blood pressure was 31mmHg lower in the GMRx2 group compared to 26 mmHg lower with standard care—the 5.8 mmHg difference was highly clinically and statistically significant. Existing evidence shows that with every 5 mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure there is a 10% reduction in major cardiovascular events such as stroke, heart attack and heart failure.

After just one month, 81% of participants in the GMRx2 group achieved clinic-measured blood pressure control versus 55% with standard care. This improvement was sustained at six months with 82% achieving control, compared with 72% under standard care. Tolerability of both treatment plans was good, with no withdrawals due to adverse events.

It is estimated that over a billion adults live with hypertension worldwide, with two-thirds living in low- and middle-income countries. High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for mortality, accounting for 10.8 million deaths a year.

Earlier this month, GMRx2 was submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of hypertension.

Phase III data from two additional GMRx2 trials were also presented, showing good tolerability and clinically relevant blood pressure reductions.

Your doctor can prescribe telmisartan, amlodipine and indapamide at quarter, half or standard dose versions, to get the same benefit.

It’s an ARB, calcium channel blocker, and diuretic, all together. These are the three types of blood pressure medicines recently described as likely best to use together, from other studies I’ve seen.

Do note you can bring down blood pressure naturally, with an easy approach being adding increments of ten grams of soluble fiber to get a nearly six point drop in systolic each time.

There are other easy tweaks I’ve posted in prior study write ups.

Daily aerobic exercise has enabled me to get off Lisinopril medication for high blood pressure. Also cut off statins since the heart is working great. Bonus from exercise is no signs of dementia, still able to develop computer program to monitor performance of my investments at age 84, sciatica pains are dormant and have enough stamina to mow suburban size lawn in Florida summers with a push mower. Okay I will concede I use Ryobi battery powered mower which is lighter than gasoline powered mower and much quieter and without fumes to inhale.

I’m happy to stay on ARB, CCB and statin for life. Statin because my mother, who also took statins for 30 years, had only 30% carotid artery blockage at age 100.

My blockage in my coronary arteries must have gotten better from daily exercise. Before I used to get chest pains after eating a good meal. Now I can eat like a glutton and not even a hint of chest pain. I have read articles saying exercise will create new coronary arteries to bypass clogged arteries.

The most important benefit of daily exercise is I have not lost any muscular strength, my skeletal structure is ram rod straight and have enough energy to mow lawn with a push mower in 90-degree weather with high humidity in Florida. I don’t think any prescriptions would give me such amazing energy and strength at age 84.

But each individual has to choose what their brain tells them. Another bonus of exercise is there are no side effects. Statins were giving me muscle aches which is listed as a side effect of statins. Lisinopril was making me get up to pee during the night.

I’ve been taking telmisartan in combination with triamterene / HCTZ for many years. My BP is routinely around 115/70, and the medicines are cheap generics. My doc seems to like combining cheap generic medications to good effect - I take 3 separate cholesterol meds that keep my numbers well within normal ranges.

Good that you’re doing well. My older brother at 85 still swims laps; genetics had a lot to do with it. I do the push mower too but do stop in the shade to rest sometimes.

I use Hawthorne powder poured over Manuka honey, celery seed & cod liver oil. I have the BP of a 10 yr old.
