CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — When it comes to the niche business of moving elephants, Dr. Amir Khalil and his team might be the best.
The Egyptian veterinarian’s résumé includes possibly the most famous elephant relocation on the planet. In 2020, Khalil’s team saved Kaavan, an Asian elephant, from years of loneliness at a Pakistan zoo...
Kaavan was dubbed the “world’s loneliest elephant” at the time, and the project was a great success. But he was not the only one that needed help....
Charley, an aging four-ton African elephant, had outlived his fellow elephants at a zoo in the capital, Pretoria, where he’d stayed for more than 20 years....
Captured as a young calf in western Zimbabwe in the 1980s and taken from his herd, he spent 16 years in a South African circus and 23 years as the prime attraction at Pretoria’s National Zoological Garden. He’s thought to be 42 years old now and spent 40 of them in captivity....
And so, a process began of training an occasionally grumpy old elephant to step willingly into a large metal transport container that would be loaded onto a truck....

Ekeogats are very intelligent and love their families. I contribute when I can to Sheldrick Wildlife in Kenya. They’ve rescued hundreds of elephants, haw a shelter for them and attendants that the elephants love too.
Perhaps they need to consult with Lizzo’s tour director.

You must be typing in the dark with just the light of the screen, as I often do.
I’d seen this video earlier.
The rescuers had the elephant in a large “cage” but let him pick the time and opportunity to exit. As it turned out, it took TWO DAYS to leave his temporary confinement!
Sea World used Flying Tiger Airlines to haul Shamu, but that was before FedEx bought them out. So I suppose FedEx is the new go-to for hauling whales.
That’s handy to know.
My husband has a great 1970’s story—he made up—-about Mattiguch and the mahoot named Disa. About an elephant Mattiguch and his mahoot. Funny story.
Is that how they get a certain doughnut lover on the broadcast set?
Sheldrick sounds like a neat place. I have a soft spot in mhy heart for elephants although I’ve never ‘met’ one.
Don't be coy! Spit it out! I'm sure that all of us here would love to hear a good great, funny story.
Regards,
Backlit keyboards are your friend.
Hubby went to bed…he tells this story better than I am able… truly funny as heck…. Hope he obliges me.
This was early 1970’s college humor… I did detect your disdain. So Fu and the horse you rode in on. With all due respect….
This 4-ton elephant isn't the only grumpy one here!
Regards,
Again FU and your agenda BS
Good idea
Hi there, auntie CeeCee
Please don’t forget to come back tomorrow and tell us the story about Mattiguch. You’ve got me intrigued!
