Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.
WASHINGTON, Friday, Aug. 25.
The following was received this evening, at 12 o'clock:
HARPER's FERRY, Friday, Aug. 26.
EARLY attempted to cross the Potomac this morning, but was repulsed by AVERILL. The enemy are still in strong force at Charlestown. Slight skirmishing continues along our lines. It is believed that the movement on the river was a feint.
Gen. CROOK made another reconnissance this morning from in front of his line on the left, capturing some sixty prisoners, including a Lieutenant-Colonel. Nothing new.
HEADQUARTERS NINETEENTH ARMY CORPS, IN THE FIELD, Thursday, Aug. 25, 1864.
in force was made yesterday, having for its object the discovery of the enemy's strength and actual position, in our immediate front. It resulted very satisfactorily, the fact being revealed that EARLY is still in force at Charlestown, and that none of his command have as yet left either in the direction of the Potomac or up the Valley.
sent out consisted of the Ninth and Fourteenth Virginia and the Thirty-fourth and Ninety-first Ohio Infantry, of JOHNSON's brigade, DUVAL's division, together with a regiment of cavalry, under Col. LOWELL, and two squadrons of the Twenty-second Pennsylvania, commanded by Major MYERS, and two squadrons of the Second Massachusetts. This command was ordered to move out rapidly from our left and strike the right of the enemy's line of skirmishers, and, if feasible, make an effort to gain their rear. While thus engaged, another force, consisting of the Tenth, Eleventh and Fifteenth Virginia Infantry, of THORBURN's division, was to be sent out to engage the enemy in our front, and, if possible, draw their attention to the real manoeuvre. By these means it was hoped that the majority, if not the entire line of skirmishers, would be captured.
