After years of encouraging shoppers to scan their own groceries, some supermarkets are checking out a move back to traditional tills.
Asda said it would put more staff on checkouts, while Morrisons admitted it might have "gone too far" with self-scan. Northern upmarket chain Booths has got rid of them altogether.
The dreaded "unexpected item in the bagging area" announcement is among a list of customer complaints about self-service tills.
But some shoppers told the BBC they're happy to skip the queues and the chit chat if it speeds up their shop.
The debate over staffed versus unstaffed tills has continued to rumble on as the number of self-scan tills has increased over the past 20 years to some 80,000 in the UK.

Yep! Every other state I lived will let you buy booze through self checkout (after an employee verifies your ID) but California needs to be special.
And every supermarket in CA seems to have at any given time two working checkers and a dozen or so self-checkout lanes. I'm always the guy holding a single 30-pack of Coors standing behind several shoppers with full carts of groceries.
I suppose it can be improved upon so maybe we should wait and see
Still: stores with 100% self checkout suck in my opinion.

Self checkouts invite shoplifting.
At Lidl and Aldi, those tasks are not in any employee’s job description.
I see BBC uses the word “shop” in place of “shopping” now. They keep debauching the language . . .
They make the customers bag their own?
Except for when you buy something like cough syrup which needs store approval. Then you are more likely to see a tumbleweed than an employee. One time I had to look up the store phone number, call it and ask for someone to come to my register. That was one angry manager and I would not have wanted to be the AWOL register watcher.
That would be an improvement over the current situation.
A Robo can be programmed not to be surly and to say, “Thank you for your business.”

I will no longer be shopping at the closest Albertsons.
I needed a couple of things and got in the line for the 6 station self checks.
While the idiot kid “watching” the registers was on tictok, I watched several “customers” sneak past after only scanning a few cheap items and skipping the meat and alcohol.
Albertson’s must suck then. Any scan of alcohol at WalMart stops the transaction , requiring a WalMart employee to authorize the purchase.
Yes. You have to purchase the bags, too. They cost $.14/ea.
I haven’t seen a bagger at a grocery store in years, except the occasional special needs kids and even that’s rare.
But then again, I mostly use delivery services.
wow, I’m a sinner but one thing, I’ve never stolen..look what’s going on in the big cities, people are allowed to steal up to $900 per day! no charges. CVS near me had to close their retail store and now only has the pharmacy open, that’s it...Many stores have closed altogether.
There are 2 commandments against stealing. It’s serious.
Heck, I miss having the guy in the grocer apron in the produce section. You'd put your zucchini or bananas in a paper bag. The guy would weigh your veggies and mark the price on the paper bag with his wax pencil.
Delivery is interesting, Walmart sells free delivery for an annual Walmart + fee, and then they badger you to pay the suggested 15 to 20% tip to the driver.
The tip is worth it for me. I avoid the hassle, the travel, the gas, carrying everything from the car.
