"Russia's wartime economic boom is masking much deeper problems, according to a group of researchers.
The authors of a recent article, who hail from institutions including the Yale School of Management, the Wharton School, the Carnegie Endowment, and the Kyiv School of Economics, cast a stark warning for Russia's economic situation despite the nation posting strong growth numbers since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Russia's economy is expected to expand another 2.4% this year, according to figures from the International Monetary Fund. However, much of that growth stems from the Kremlin's wild spending spree, and Russia's economy is hindered by a number of problems that could set it up for trouble in the long run, the researchers said.
"The reality of Russia's economic situation is far more complex and concerning than some would have you believe. The productive core of the Russian economy has been severely compromised," the group wrote in an op-ed for Fortune this week.
Russia has been spending heavily on its military and defense sectors, setting a record military budget for 2024. But that spending has come at a cost to Russia's private sector, some economists say, with other areas of its economy being slammed by a severe shortage of workers as resources get funneled into Russia's invasion of Ukraine." Ukrainian troops crossed over into Russia’s Bryansk region on Wednesday, according to a Russian official and military bloggers, as Ukraine advances further into neighboring Kursk.
A prominent Russian military blogger said late on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces had attacked around the settlement of Zabrama, just over the border of Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region, at approximately 7 p.m. local time. Zabrama sits northeast of Kyiv.

Can we get real about looming catastrophes? The US currently holds a staggering $34 trillion in national debt, equating to 107% of its GDP. This ticking bomb compares very badly with Russia whose debt-to-GDP ratio is a mere 17%. Just servicing the interest on that gargantuan $34 trillion monument to the Peter Principal consumes 76% of ALL income tax revenue collected and exceeds the entire US defence budget. And that’s just govt debt- factor in the nation’s personal debt and liabilities and Russia is doing much better than we are.
Kursk is where the original Nazis were stopped in ‘43 and marked the beginning of the end. The same will happen to Nazi 2.0. Zelensky gambled the last 5k of their best trained soldiers on this adventure and they’ll lose them all soon enough.

“Ukraine rates the 4th in the number of people recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations” for saving Jews during the Holocaust.
The history of the Jews in Ukraine goes back over a thousand years. Jewish communities have existed in the territory of Ukraine from the time of the Kievan Rus’ (late 9th to mid-13th century).
Some of the most important Jewish religious and cultural movements, from Hasidism to Zionism, rose either fully or to an extensive degree in the territory of modern Ukraine.
According to the World Jewish Congress, the Jewish community in Ukraine constitutes the third-largest in Europe and the fifth-largest in the world.
In the Ukrainian People’s Republic (1917-1920), Yiddish was declared a state language, along with Ukrainian and Russian. At that time, the Jewish National Union was created and the community was granted an autonomous status.
Yiddish was used on Ukrainian currency in this same period, between 1917 and 1920. Before World War II, slightly less than one-third of Ukraine’s urban population consisted of Jews; they were the largest national minority in Ukraine.
Total civilian losses during World War II and the German occupation of Ukraine are estimated at seven million. More than one million Jews were shot and killed by the Einsatzgruppen [paramilitary death squads of Nazi Germany that were responsible for mass-murder, primarily by shooting, during World War II (1939–1945) in German-occupied Europe.]Ukraine rates the 4th in the number of people recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations” for saving Jews during the Holocaust.

Thank you.
I don’t profess to be an expert. But, it seems to be very relevant to understand how the Putin invasion is affecting the Russian economy.
And the United Methodist Church person recommends a twenty-minute video by a one-time home renovation chap who traded for earning his living as a war commenter on YouTube/Adsense.
Four hours of video which she could not possibly have actually watched/heard at the time she did, all the while posting Newsweek and Censor material as well. Seems very much like that old "vlog promotion" which she has done for well over two years.
As to Jews in Ukraine ( "You may appreciate this information" ):
"Between 1941 and 1945, between 850,000–1,600,000 Jews were killed in Ukraine, which included assistance of local collaborators." The Holocaust in Ukraine
That is not going to happen because US and NATO resources are far larger. Moreover, the prospective Russian defeat by Ukraine would almost certainly end Putin's vile regime and force Russia into a defensive alliance with the US and NATO that checkmates China. That would help avert the impending war between China and the US.
"The numbers of Righteous are not necessarily an indication of the actual number of rescuers in each country, but reflect the cases that were made available to Yad Vashem."
Additionally, with so many murderous hands from so many nations (more than the rigtheous hands, sadly) one finds, " With an estimated one and a half million Jews killed in Ukraine from June 1941–44, with thousands of Ukrainians assisting Germans in slaughtering their Jewish neighbors (deceived by the German promise of independence), the Holocaust remains the most somber page in the history of the Jews in the region. "
Soucre: The Ironies of History: The Ukraine Crisis through the Lens of Jewish History
Were there "righteous" in both Ukraine and Russia during the Holcaust?" Yes. Yad Vashen reports of 2,691 from Ukraine and another 217 from Russia. All together and individually, such numbers are dwarfed by the Holocaust in Europe, including Ukraine.
Excuse me: You are speaking of Nazi Germany in the spring of 1945, right? Because that would be absolutely true.
German foreign debt had dropped to virtually nil. Whereas it had been heavily indebted to, say, the Soviet Union and the U.S. prior to the outbreak of hostilities, it no longer owed them a plug Reichsmark.
Its economy was certainly growing (although production was devoted almost entirely to the manufacture of armaments rather than, say, consumer goods).
And unemployment was virtually nonexistent. The Volkssturm, you know! Why, even infirm pensioners in their 70s were once again proudly serving under arms!
Seriously: In terms of battlefield casualties, alone, Russia is suffering the equivalent of one 9-11 every week.
