(NewsNation) — If you need money from an ATM, and it’s not a machine run by your bank, you’ll be paying more than ever before, according to an annual survey from Bankrate.
The national average combined out-of-network ATM fee is now $4.77, up from $4.72 last year. The combined fee is the sum of the charge by an out-of-network bank, $3.19, plus the average charge of $1.58 levied by your own bank for using an out-of-network ATM.
“Confine cash withdrawals to in-network ATMs or get cash back when using a debit card,” advises Greg McBride, Bankrate’s chief financial analyst. “See if your bank participates in a nationwide ATM network that can be used free of charge.”

I use cash less and less nowadays and only get it from the my branch bank down the street.
Wow. I stopped paying ATM fees in the ‘80s. For me it was a matter of principle. I couldn’t justify paying money to get money out of my own bank.
I did start using a debit card at grocery stores back around the turn of the century and I just get an extra 20 out when I pay for my groceries. And there was never a fee attached to that. I don’t know if that’s still possible though since I haven’t tried it in decades.
I actually stopped using my ATM card all together because if somehow my information gets out, the money will be withdrawn from my account. At least with credit cards you don’t have to worry about that and you can always pay them off every month at the end of the month which is what I do.
Yep or better yet just use the debit card.
I went for almost 20 years without carrying cash at all and just use my credit card for everything. Pay it off at the end of the month. It’s fantastic. The extra money I got at the end of the year from my two credit cards was actually kind of shocking. Although one of them gives me airline miles instead of money.
No fee at Walmart when making a purchase here.
USAA has done a number of things lately to piss me off, but I’ve never paid an ATM fee, regardless of which bank’s machine I use. USAA pays them all.
Join a credit union and you can use any Allpoint ATM in the country .
Convenience stores like WaWa and Quick Chek usually have fee free ATMs. Conveniently located next to the lottery machine.

Smart thing to do. Card interest rates of all kinds are very high, if not downright usurious.
I prefer to have high rates working FOR me rather than against me. ;)
Hmm. I use a Credit Union, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Allpoint ATM.
I looked it up. Circle K’s have them. Cool.
I was in Spain.
The first bank wanted 7 euros.
I went to a second ATM. They wanted something similar. Turned it down but got a 4 euros charge.
I went to a third ATM. They wanted 7 Euros as a fee and offered a fairly bad exchange rate. I went along.
My bank charges $5 for a foreign ATM withdrawal.
Next time in Europe I’ll bring $200 in dollars and go to a money exchange place in the heart of a tourist district. A lot of that will be in $5 bills which I’ll just use unconverted as church donations. I’m sure a church will get a better exchange deal than I could and it will make a positive impression for American tourists.

LOL. Placement science.
“Negroids hardest hit”
For Hartford, the Allpoint website offered up CVS or Walgreens. I didn’t notice any banks listed for my search area.
I didn’t see any Allpoints for Spain.
Yep or better yet just use the debit card.
~~~
I never use a debit card, specially online, but it’s also risky to do in restaurants or anywhere that people handle your cards.
I also very very rarely pay ATM fees.
I prefer to carry cash.
I have yet to get mugged or robbed, so I’ll continue to do so until I regret it.
I’m struggling to see a problem here. Most of the Freepers here use their bank or credit union to obtain cash, as do I. No one’s putting a gun to the heads of those using other ATMs, except for those living in Chicago or NYC.
USAA will cover up to a certain dollar amount (which you have presumably kept under).
But their ATM fee reimbursements are not unlimited.
Yes, WaWa has no charge on their ATMs. We use them in Florida when away from our local CU. Our CU does not charge ATM fee on other ATMs as long as you have fewer than 6 withdrawals per month. I rarely have more than one.
