The British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been confirmed dead by search and rescue authorities after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm, according to two news agencies.

Lynch, 59, the founder of Autonomy Corporation, was among six people missing after the British-flagged 56-metre sailing boat Bayesian capsized at about 5am local time off the coast of Palermo when the area was hit by a tornado.

Both Reuters and AFP news agencies reported that Lynch’s body had been recovered from the wreck, citing sources close to the rescue operation.

...

Once described as Britain’s Bill Gates, Lynch spent much of the last decade in court defending his name against allegations of fraud related to the sale of Autonomy to the US tech company Hewlett-Packard for $11bn (£7bn).

He was acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June after he had spent more than a year living in effect under house arrest.

I just do not see how a roughly a 184 foot sailing vessel sinks in a storm a kilometer from shore.
I understand that it literally got hit by a water spout/small tornado. I also understand that the water there is about 160’ deep(50 meters).

I can understand it blowing over on it side. That has happened many times to sailboats in micro bursts. What I do no understand is why a vessel with a heavy lead keel did not right itself. Then remain floating because of the air trapped inside the hull is still lighter than the water around it.

Incompetent crew or the crew was overruled by Lynch.

You always have your eye on the weather and try to stay out of its way.

I have to think that there was ample warning of bad weather coming.

Either they were not watching weather reports or they ignored them.

Either it was negligence or willful disregard of safety.

there have been articles citing an issue about the keel and where it was placed. Human error.

The ship had a retractable keel. At anchor it is customary to retract the keel for comfort and less noise. This made the boat unstable in high winds (Other boats in area survived) There was no indication of a storm approaching on weather forecasts.High winds hit the extremely tall mast and the boat capsized and sank in 12 minutes.

The saddest part of this story is the death of his 18 year-old daughter.

Ship was designed to withstand heavy storms/spouts (Unless some of the hatches were left open, hmmm....) and the crew had plenty of warning to the point of having time to disembark the passengers (Only half a mile from shore). This event will get memory holed quickly.

From a Times story...

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

My guess is an inexperienced crew, domineering owner, or a combination of both.

If I learned any from Matt Damon, he will resurface along the southern coast of France and haunt the CIA for many years.

But this guy is supposed to be Brit, so maybe its M6 that needs to be worried?
