Early life exposure to common chemical permanently disrupts gut microbiome, mouse study finds

Early life exposure to 'forever chemicals' in the environment permanently disrupts the gut microbiome in mice, contributing to the development of metabolic disease in later life, according to new research.

The results suggest that human exposure to these chemicals during early childhood may be contributing to the recent epidemic of metabolic disorders, including obesity and type 2 diabetes among adults.

The researchers focused specifically on 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (TCDF), a widespread persistent organic pollutant (POP) that is a byproduct of waste incineration, metal production, and fossil-fuel and wood combustion.

TCDF accumulates in the food chain, and humans are primarily exposed through consumption of high-fat foods, such as meat, dairy products and some fish. Babies can be exposed through consumption of breast milk.

The team examined the effects of TCDF in two groups of mice—a test group, or those treated with TCDF and a control group, or those receiving no treatment.

"We found that early life exposure to TCDF permanently disrupted the gut microbiomes of the wild-type mice," said Yuan Tian. "We also found that these mice had higher body weight and glucose intolerance at age four months."

"These results suggest that early-life TCDF exposure may be causing the disturbances in gut microbiome function and health outcomes later in life, even well after the TCDF has been eliminated from the body," Tian said.

She explained that the gut microbiome disturbances were marked by a decrease in certain bacterial species, including Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium that is also typically found in the human gut microbiome.

To investigate the importance of Akkermansia muciniphila in influencing health outcomes, the team experimented with administering the bacterium as a probiotic to TCDF-treated mice. The probiotic restored the microbiome to its normal state.

Akkermansia muciniphila is available in some probiotic formulations.

I had not noticed this, before today. It’s not in common formulations, however.

Restoring this made the gut microbiome normal again.

In intestinal surgery it is common to try and sterilize the gut with antibiotics prior to surgery. Your gut bacteria is restored by what you eat which is full of microbes.

In rare cases not related to surgery a gut bacteria is bad and detrimental. Gut bacteria are essential to digestion. We infuse the gut bacteria to restore the proper colonies. In effect infuse feces. It works.

More scare tactic nonsense.
Wood burning? As ancient as the use of fire for warmth and cooking.
Nonsense!

Think you may be talking to a different poster.

Made no reference to wood burning.

Some houses had garbage incinerators. Ours had one in the basement and we used it on a regular basis. There was also a huge community incinerator a mile away from us, plus a landfill and a few junkyards, not to mention a manufacturer by the name of American Asbestos. One such landfill was a toxic industrial chemical dump called Liquid Disposal and all hell broke loose back in the 80s when it was discovered how bad the leeching was and what were in the drums that were buried there, where just across the street is a branch of the Clinton River flowing towards Lake St. Clair. It’s like an abandoned property now, adjacent to one of the Township’s nature centers. All the fuss over it has died down over the years while the ground is probably still hazardous to humans. Then there was the gravel pit (dug out from an inactive older landfill) in between the Liquid Disposal site and our side of the river “plateau”. We played baseball in it before the waters came up. After that, we swam in it for another 3-4 years as teenagers...American Asbestos went out of business in the early 80s and anyone who remembers might wonder whether they’d been exposed to dangerous levels of toxins and whether it’s one of those things that makes you stronger if it doesn’t kill you first.

Duck duck go shows lots of Akkermansia muciniphila, either neat or in combos.
