Legendary TV talker Phil Donahue has died following a lengthy illness, his family has announced.
The host of The Phil Donahue Show passed away at the age of 88 on Sunday, while surrounded by relatives, including his actress wife Marlo Thomas, at his home.
A talk-show trailblazer, his program was the first of its kind, including now commonplace concepts like audience participation.
It ran for nearly 30 years, solidifying the onetime news reporter's place in the annals of TV history.
Donahue had recently been awarded the presidential medal of freedom for his storied career.
Donahue is survived by his wife sister, children, and grandchildren, all of whom were by his side Sunday night when he passed, their statement said.
Also present was his beloved golden retriever, Charlie, as the illness he had been battling remains unknown.
Just last month, Marlo posted a more recent photo of the icon on Instagram, showing him on a farm in Canada feeding a horse.
Unlike when he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Joe Biden back in May, he stood on his own accord with the aid of a cane, looking health and happy in the idyllic setting.
The shot was snapped at least a year-and-half ago, during filming for Hallmark's A Magical Christmas Village, which featured Thomas as a star,

Agreed….Marlo Thomas he was the best husband in the world… and that was worth sh*t. Her words….
If nothing else, he didn’t discriminate with respect to guests.
Sadly Raquel and Leslie are both gone now as well. The dress Raquel is wearing in this scene is actually up for auction in a couple of weeks or so along with a bunch of other stuff of hers.
I tire of this crap. There is no privacy after death.

Oh man, surely you jest! He was not my favorite guy but that is WAY out of line.
Marlo Thomas must have had a lot to do with that. No male goes off the deep end like that on national tv without some serious browbeating from the wife.

No. He’s pining for the Fjords.
He sure was. And while he could be a real whiner towards the guests, he wasn’t a perpetually angry @$$h0le extremist like we all deal with and see today.
To give more context, while obviously liberal, “Donohue” was NOT “The View”.
Rand probably had to reconcile with the fact she herself made the choice to be a guest on his show. Totally her choice, so its not like she didn’t know what she was getting herself mixed up in.
In his memory I youtubed his 1987 interview of Donald Trump. Trump was great-Donahue came across as jealous and liberal self. RIP
I watched his interview with Crippen and Young after the first shuttle flight. He pushed the microphone at them at one point in the interview and asked them if they were afraid during the launch. Young says, why don’t you take this crip. Crippen responds,” Mr. Donahue, anyone sitting on 60 tons of powdered aluminum and a 1/2 million gallons of liquid hydrogen and isn’t afraid just doesn’t understand the situation.” Donahue was frozen for a bit with that response. Only interview I ever watched of his.
He was an pompous jerk but he seems like a conservative compared to the radical Left that’s on TV now.
Won’t be missed.
