Statin prescription can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases against air pollutant exposure in older adults
Medical Xpress / Korea University College of Medicine / European Journal of Preventive Cardiology ^ | Aug. 9, 2024 | Kyuwoong Kim et al

It has been discovered that older adults over 60 years old who are prescribed statins against air pollutant exposure can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, especially stroke.

By utilizing the National Health Insurance Service big data, Prof. Seogsong Jeong and Kyuwoong Kim confirmed such results after 6 years of follow-up on the effect of statin use on cardiovascular benefit of statin use against air pollutant exposure in older adults.

The research team conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service database linked to average daily PM10 and PM2.5 exposure data among 1,229,414 adults aged 60 years or older.

The follow-up period was from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2021, and its analysis was performed by dividing the cohort into statin prescription group (prescribed for more than 90 days) and non-prescription group (not prescribed or prescribed for less than 90 days).

As a result, exposure to high level air pollutants of PM10 (>50μg/m3) and PM2.5 (>25μg/m3) showed that the group prescribed statins had 20% and 17% lower risk of stroke compared to the non-prescribed group, respectively. In the case of exposure to low or medium level air pollutants of PM10 (>50μg/m3) and PM2.5 (>25μg/m3), the statin prescribed group showed similar risk reduction.

Such results were consistent in the analysis results that defined statin dosage as the total number of prescription days and defined daily dose (DDD). This means that prescriptions in the aging population are associated with significantly reducing the risk of stroke regardless of air pollutant exposure levels.

Also, reduction in the risk of stroke due to statin prescription showed a dose-response relationship to the risk of cardiovascular disease due to air pollutant exposure.

Statins appear to help with air pollution-caused cardiovascular disease.

People who used statins did better than those who hadn’t needed statins for other caused.

Statins have side effects. Muscle aches, tenderness, or weakness are common side effects, and some people may experience abnormal muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney problems. Statins may also increase the risk of developing tendinopathies, which can lead to tendon ruptures. Consult your physician and do your homework.

‘tendinopathies, which can lead to tendon ruptures’

Never heard of that before.

My doctor was okay for reducing from 20mg per day down to 15 mg per week (5 mg pills M-W-F). But I have noticed my back muscles get sore when I lift or push a mower.

They can also cause your health to deteriorate to the point where you die. Another drug company scam that the doctors get kickbacks for.

For me it was peripheral neuropathy. I cold turkey quit statins and my legs and feet improved noticably but the damage done is permanent.

Even the NIH came out several years ago and said that statins can do bad things and should probably be prescribed less. I struggled with them off and on for 25 years or more going on and off them because of pain, finally just told the doc NO. DONE. But that’s just me. I don’t trust a lot of what they push.

“‘tendinopathies, which can lead to tendon ruptures’”

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics also can cause tendon rupture ...

Inflammation from excessive blood glucose and insulin constantly flowing through your veins is what cause plaque buildup and heart disease.

Statins are just killing of the firemen on the way to the fire.

To stop and reverse metabolic syndrome you have to quit eating food laden in carbs and processed foods full of chemicals and fake molecules.

Easy! Just like the antibiotics Cipro. Cause damage to your body. So what else is new Pharma? The cure is worse than the disease. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. STATINS ARE DEADLY! You think Pharma is gonna tell you?

They also, in many many cases, appear to cause way more harm than they “alleviate”...

I’ve read some things about statin drugs recently & will never go on them. Lowering cholesterol is actually bad unless you’re WAY over the normal amount & they keep lowering what is considered normal. A new level is recommended at 190, instead of 300. But our brains need cholesterol, & I’m much more afraid of living to 90 with dementia than dying of a heart attack at 70.
