Learn more about this very short-lived invention, the rim blow steering wheel! The Rim blow steering wheel now this was a very short-lived design that was put on vehicles in the late 60s through early 1970s and then was gone almost as fast as it was introduced likely for a number of reasons that we're going to discuss you certainly don't see it today but I believe the overall philosophy was a good one and that was that most cars at this point had some sort of a horn ring that you would deploy or touch to activate the horn you can see here on this 68 Mercury the horn ring across the lower portion of the wheel and then this beautiful 1969 Imperial steering wheel that has the horn ring that goes around the entire four spoke design I just think this is one of my favorite wheels of all time on this 69 Imperial.

I've seen this steering wheel before but never knew what it was called or why it was designed this way.

AKA, the Harris Wheel.

I miss the old ring that you used to blow the horn. You could find it in a microsecond by touchy. Today’s tiny keypads for blowing the horn are impossible to find.

Maybe that’s why you don’t hear car horns tooting so much any more.

I call Adam the “Jay Leno of the Midwest.” He has a sizable collection of late 60s to early 70s mostly American cars. He likes Ford 460 engines, so he’s ok in my book.

Had one on the Cougar. Dog wanted to sit in my lap and blow the horn.

“Dog wanted to sit in my lap and blow the horn.”

LOL...I can just picture that.

I worked in China Fall ‘76 to Spring ‘77. I worked in a small village in the Yunnan Province where we were building a fertilizer factory. The Chinese housed all of us foreign workers in a big guest house and every morning a small bus would arrive to take us to the plant a mile away. It was the only vehicle in the entire village! The driver loved his horn and would blow it before people were boarding, while we were boarding and toot it many times on the one-mile trip. He must have thought he was the Big Cheese the way he blew that horn. And it was every day, without fail, both to and from the plant.

My 69 Mach I had it.
Loved it!

Two hands on the wheel and simple thumb toot while smoking the tires

I had never heard of this. The inner part of the steering wheel rim was squeezable to sound the horn. Some of my cars had the button as the center of the rim. A couple had small buttons on the bar which I never could hit when I needed it.

I need a voice activated horn so I can swear at another driver and the horn will sound.

Every car has that now. I automatically press the “stop” button on my 2024 Honda Accord, which deactivates the stupid thing. I’ve trained myself to automatically do this each time I start the car.

There is a device you can buy to keep it off permanently but it requires taking off the front panel and messing around with some of the wiring.

I lived in the Phillipines in the mid sixties. I figured everyone in Asia drove with one hand on the horn button!

It can be disabled, in your computer’s settings/controls.

I’ve got a ‘23 Accord. I do the same thing but invariably I’ll forget and get annoyed again. And what’s with that stupid drivers attention dash warning?

I found mine by accident while detail cleaning the wheel and dash. Defensive driving habits do that. Driver's Ed should be mandatory in every high school...along with civics and practical home economics (budgeting, self-maintenance, etc.).

My wife’s new Subaru has it but you can shut it off. Can’t stand it.

Amazon sells 12 Volt microphone/speaker systems for swearing at other drivers! It is very loud, too! But.....you have to be careful and not get shot!
LOL
