Avolcano has erupted in Russia after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of the country, according to state-run media.
The Russian news agency, TASS, reported that the Shiveluch volcano in the region of Kamchatka started to erupt on Saturday. CNN noted that the volcano is about 280 miles from the coastal city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000.

Bumpy at the Top!
280 miles from the nearest city... I think they’ll be good. I suppose a few peasants here and there will be in danger... But when you’re losing thousands on the battlefield every week... What’s a few peasants here and there?
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is way out east—probably not many peasants in the area.
In essence it is. It’s massive. This, from Wikipedia:
It is about 40,000 km (25,000 mi) long[1] and up to about 500 km (310 mi) wide,[2] and surrounds most of the Pacific Ocean.
The Ring of Fire contains between 750 and 915 active or dormant volcanoes, around two-thirds of the world total.[3][4] The exact number of volcanoes within the Ring of Fire depends on which regions are included.
About 90% of the world’s earthquakes,[5] including most of its largest,[6][7] occur within the belt.
Geology tidbit.
Subduction vs SideSlip.
Subduction is one tectonic plate being pushed down beneath another to melt. These quakes are big.
Sideslip is two sides of a fault moving sideways in comparison to the other. They can be more shallow than subduction and get some magnitude that way, but generally speaking the really big ones are subduction.
Alaska, the mega one in Japan, the huge one down by Indonesia that flooded Thailand and Sumatra early 2000s . . . those are subduction. We are WAY overdue for a subduction event offshore Washington state.
It’s interesting that only the tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula is actually in the Ring of Fire. I would have expected it to cover more territory to the west.
That city they mentioned is a big fishing port in very cold region, 51 degrees for the high today. There is a big volcano right next to the city but the active one is far away.
Cue up the tornado, the fire, and the flood. Then the plague of locusts.
It is on the ring of fire.
It’s hardly in Russia.
It’s in the future West Alaska.
Thanks for the map. It is a good visual to understand how it connects.
That volcano goes off every two or three years, as I recall...
“They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can’t get away now.”
“We’re surrounded. That simplifies the problem”.
And they should know about the sea.
Fun fact: The Siberian Traps were formed in one of the largest volcanic events in the last 500 million years. The eruptions continued for 2 million years and may have been responsible for the Permian Extinction Event, aka The Great Dying.
