Subduction vs SideSlip.
Subduction is one tectonic plate being pushed down beneath another to melt. These quakes are big.
Sideslip is two sides of a fault moving sideways in comparison to the other. They can be more shallow than subduction and get some magnitude that way, but generally speaking the really big ones are subduction.
Alaska, the mega one in Japan, the huge one down by Indonesia that flooded Thailand and Sumatra early 2000s . . . those are subduction. We are WAY overdue for a subduction event offshore Washington state.
