Singer Huey Lewis is getting his own mockumentary-style sitcom.
The rocker will star as himself in Whatever Happened to Huey Lewis, a fictionalized version of his life. In reporting the project, Deadline noted that the show will be done “Curb Your Enthusiasm-style” with its story centered around Lewis’ efforts to navigate “his new life after losing his hearing."
“With the help of his codependent family and eccentric celebrity friends, Huey will tackle this hilarious next phase with his signature Heart and Soul,” Deadline further explained.
That plot closely mirrors Lewis’ life in recent years The rocker was diagnosed with Meniere's disease in 2018, causing severe hearing loss. He has not toured since going public with the condition.
Lewis will executive produce the show alongside several Hollywood veterans, most notably late night television host Jimmy Kimmel. Kirker Butler (Only Murders in the Building, Family Guy) will write and produce.
Lewis has dabbled in acting in the past, appearing on TV shows such as One Tree Hill and The King of Queens. He had a recurring role on the sitcom Hot in Cleveland, and appeared in the feature films Short Cuts and Duets. Fans also likely remember his cameo in 1985’s Back to the Future, which featured two of his best-loved tunes: “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time.”
Lewis’ most recent album, Weather, was released in 2020. Earlier this year, a jukebox musical based on his catalog of songs opened on Broadway. The play, titled The Heart of Rock and Roll, began in April but closed in June.
Huey lewis is old news and I don’t need a new drug either. :)
Can’t they ever just go away quietly?
Guy’s a prick, prima donna. Jimmy Kimmel? Will be aggressively unfunny.
80’s. A good time for music-very good.
Too bad Jimmy Kimmel is involved. I would’ve watched it, but now I won’t since that POS is part of it.
Huey Lewis and the band doing their thing back in 1989:

I have a hard time disliking Huey Lewis. He reminds me of a musical Mike Rowe — sort of an affable everyman kind of guy.
Plus he put out some solid pop music, with lots of nice horns parts which you never hear nowadays.
Everyone I know met him said he was nice and just a guy.
Was that just before he put a ax to the back of the other guy’s head?
Unfortunately, no.
Anything involving Jimmy Kimmel is a hard no.
It would be funny if Huey sang a bunch of parodies, or just misheard lyrics.
“I Want a New Duck”
“‘Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy”
“Don’t Wanna Be Your Pizza Burning”
Etc.
Early in their career they had a gig to play at the prom
For Mitty HS— but prior to that got booked months in advance, their first album hit it big. Other bands would have cancelled the little HS gig but the band and Huey honored their commitment—that tells you a lot
Huey’s a good guy, very affable and loves his fans. I’m glad he’s found a way to make lemonade out of the lemon of his hearing loss. He’s a pretty accomplished golfer, as well.
If you want to put on a great party R&B album, “Plan B” that he and the News made in the early 2000s is a real gem.
I like Huey Lewis. He's a funny guy in interview settings as well.
After their heyday as pop stars faded, the band made a very lucrative gig playing corporate parties, getting paid upwards of $100k an event. They'd show up, play their respective roster of upbeat, danceable 80s hits, mingle with the crowd for a bit, and collect a nice fat paycheck. They had a packed calendar.
My friend had to be his guide in Hong Kong for a gig. Said he was a prima donna, rude to servers and generally a dick. This guy rarely has a bad word about people. Maybe he was having a bad night.
Tightest band I ever seen. Spot on vocals and harmonies and just flawless musicianship. .
I'm surprised they would record there. It's all brick, which I thought they considered bad for accoustics.
