PREPARING FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF A DRAFT WITHOUT PANIC
War on the Rocks ^ | 8/8/24 | Taren Sylvester and Catherine Kuzminski

Conscription — a practice most Americans believe should be relegated to the dustbin of history — has returned as an uncomfortable topic of conversation among U.S. allies and adversaries alike. This has generated concern and even conspiracy theories among American voters. But a candid discussion would be healthier. The fact is, if the United States hopes to deter or defeat a Chinese attack on Taiwan, it should be prepared to effectively implement a draft. To be clear, this is a solution of last resort, but one that may be necessary.

Right now, U.S. mobilization has not been tested in decades. As a result, current ideas about how it would function are woefully out of date. Being prepared to execute a draft requires buy-in from across all branches of government — and society writ large.

At a minimum, the executive branch and Congress should actively pursue a more proactive approach. The National Security Council should take the lead on mobilization exercises. Congress should also get out ahead on expanding Selective Service System registration to all Americans between the ages of 18–25, thereby preventing future legal challenges to the current all-male registration system when time may be of the essence.

If there is ever a draft the powers in charge will only draft from republican states. No way in hell the democrats allow their soi bois to be cannon fodder.

This again. It crops up every couple of years. I gently suggest it's an example of the tendency to plan well for the last war while ignoring the changing environment in which the next one is likely to be fought. We can't, nor should we expect to, keep a standing army of 10 million men and women trained sufficiently for modern warfare - the resources required for that are little short of total war. Untrained but identified and ready to begin training is the best we might hope for.

Let us consider past examples of conscription. What happened to Kitchener's army in 1915 tells us the fate of untrained, conscripted troops thrown into the fray too quickly. Pershing's reputation was blackened (in France, anyway) for insisting on avoiding a repetition of that with the equally drafted U.S. contingent in 1917 but he was right.

The issue here is how "prepared" such a contingent can be made given the nature of modern combat. Information warfare, unmanned combat vehicles of all description, and the incredible increase in lethality of trained individual soldiers has created a deadly trap for the innocent.

Conscription for other purposes - civic awareness, "equity", and a raft of social reasons - this is a quite different discussion, and carries with it a different set of considerations. But I'm not sure we need a Hitler Jugend. It didn't help anyway.

Nope. No one that i love and any stranger I can convince will not be conscripted, drafted, nudged, or brainwashed into fighting another dirty war for the elites.

The elites can send their own families.

This isn’t 1940. If a world war broke out it would be over in a few hours.

Goodbye, Mommy, I'm off to get a Commie,
So send me a salami and try to smile, somehow.
I'll look for you war is over
An hour-and-a-half from now.

Old days: Join the US military to defend your country.
Now: Join the US military to defend someone else’s country.

It's not even defending someone else's country - it's just dying to protect their bank accounts. They'll move wherever they can and have no loyalty to any country or countrymen.

The idiots in DC have forgotten about linkage in foreign affairs. The Iranians, Hezbollah and Houthis are being armed with comparable systems as we speak. Putin has shown a tremendous amount of restraint in reacting to NATO’s escalations and provocations. He’s been trying to walk a fine line between ending this thing with minimal Russian casualties and a wide open war with NATO, sans the proxies. The criticism Putin has taken in Russia is that he has been too weak, too timid and too slow in bringing this SMO to an end. He won’t be able to ignore those voices any longer. We are on the verge of seeing Russian “shock and awe” and NATO, I suspect, will react by doubling down again.

“The fact is, if the United States hopes to deter or defeat a Chinese attack on Taiwan, it should be prepared to effectively implement a draft.” Says WHO? Such a war would involve aircraft, surface ships, submarines, and *tiny* numbers of special operations personnel. It would be a war of brainpower over brute force. And the Biden/Kamala regime would come up LACKING!

It seems that many see way that suburban white women will primarily vote for kaMAla.

Maybe the narrative out of Trump’s campaign should be that Trump keeps America out of war. Kamala will have ears starting all over God’s green earth.

Do these women REALLY want to send their kids overseas to be killed? That might hit a nerve with them and make them consider who they want as CIC?

“If the cause is Just and the people support the war action, a draft isn’t necessary.”

Not really. Even in the Civil War and WWII volunteering failed to meet the need. In fact, for WWII they started drafting even before we were as involved.

Not really. Even in the Civil War and WWII volunteering failed to meet the need. In fact, for WWII they started drafting even before we were as involved.

Right after Pearl Harbor volunteering was so intense that the draft was suspended for a year.

After 9/11 the volunteering was so intense that even people like Tampon Tim volunteered to reenlist after initially planning to retire, and people like Pat Tillman gave up a lucrative NFL career to volunteer for military service.

There were also indications that during WWII had there not been a draft, the US would have still met their military needs through volunteers. But since there was a draft, after the initial surge of volunteerism people just waited for their number to be called because it allowed the military services to regulate the number of people coming in per month to fit their available training slots.

The draft was very necessary for the Civil War, Korea and Vietnam, because very few people wanted to fight in those wars.

After Vietnam the draft was eliminated. During the the 20 years of the War on Terror that we fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, we met recruiting goals without needing a draft.

We're not meeting recruiting goals today because the military has gone Woke and nobody wants to be a part of that.

There are also indications that a draft may not fulfill military needs in a large scale war because of the young Americans who are unfit for service due to obesity. The draft pool might end up being mostly "4F" anyway.
