Probability of an Engagement on or Near the Old Antietam Battle-Ground-Gen. Hunter Superceded-Sheridan Takes Command.
WASHINGTON, Sunday, Aug. 5.
After careful investigation of rumors, and on inquiry at the military headquarters in this city, it has been ascertained beyond a doubt that there has been no considerable contest fought in the neighborhood of the old Antietam battle-ground up to 6 o'clock this evening. This is made certain by the fact that we have telegraphic communication with Hagerstown, and that the military operator there, in his usual dispatches, addressed to these headquarters during the day, has not even referred to a rumor of a battle.
It is difficult to ascertain where the rebels are posted, but the impression among military men here is that a collision will take place near Middletown, about twelve miles north of Frederick.
Gen. HUNTER has been superseded by Gen. SHERMAN in the command of the army operating on the Upper Potomac. Maj.-Gen. COUCH has returned from Pittsburgh and is at his headquarters in this city.
Rumored Movement Against Wheeling Early being Reinforced Doubtful Reports.
BALTIMORE, Sunday, Aug. 7 -- 9:45 P.M.
It is reported here that a force of rebels were crossing the Potomac yesterday beyond Hancock, and were going in the direction of Wheeling. The same authority says that EARLY has been or is being reinforced by LONGSTREET's Corps, and that Wheeling is the point to be aimed at. We have no means of ascertaining the reliability of this report, but think it is rather unreliable.

There is something haunted with the land around Antidam. I have camped out on the C&O towpath nearby and can attest to this. Although it is very beautiful, that beauty is unnaturally timeless and eerie. Several decades before the Civil War there were deadly clashes between the German and Irish navvys digging the canal in that spot, followed by a Yellow Fever epidemic leading to more deaths and unmarked mass graves. Even the Indians, long before Columbus, avoided the area.
