Where is the alligator in Lake Erie? Tracks spotted on search's third day

For those who are out on the water near the Erie bayfront attempting to catch the Lake Erie alligator, Jayson Olsen from Siren's Nest of Exotic Rescue has some advice: Leave the task to the professionals.

Olsen, 38, was out on Lake Erie around the foot of East Avenue where the alleged alligator was initially spotted. His journey began early Wednesday morning. Since then he has encountered individuals who are also seeking the alligator.

"Let the professionals handle this," Olsen said. "If anything, call the (Erie-Western Pennsylvania) Port Authority or even the game warden or commission."

Olsen, an animal trapper, learned about the sighting because of the Facebook post by Stina Roach, who initially spotted the reptile. Olsen said he is concerned if adults attempt to catch the alligator, it will flee.

Plan of action for catching the gator Olsen said professionals are prepared with equipment and a plan for once the gator is captured.

"We have a thickened net that is used for larger fish," Olsen said. "It's about two and a half feet depth-wise. We have a hook if we need it and we have a claw and special gloves. We also have a couple of bins just in case, depending on the size."

If the alligator is captured by Siren's Nest, Olsen plans on handing the gator over to a rehabilitation center possibly in Pittsburgh. If this is an exotic pet, Olsen does not plan on handing it back to the owner for fear it would end up in the lake again.

I guess no body of water in the U.S. is safe from alligators now. It’s not just Florida anymore.

Catch him and send him to the Rio Grande!

What is the water temp up there this time of year? I find it hard to believe an alligator could survive even in the middle of the summer.

I’ll catch this bird for ya, but it ain’t gonna be easy. Bad gator! Not like goin’ down to the pond chasing bluegills or tommycats. This gator will swallow you whole. Shakin’. Tenderizin’. Down you go. Now we got to do it quick. That’ll bring back the tourists and it’ll put all your businesses on a payin’ basis. But it’s not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, Chief. I’ll find him for three, but I’ll catch him and kill him for ten. You’ve got to make up your minds. Gonna stay alive and ante up? Or want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter.

People come to Florida and other southern states and find a ‘baby’ gator at a lake or creek and take it home to Yankeeland. It’s illegal of course.

After about 6 months it’s too big for the aquarium or bathtub and instead of turning it in to a vet or zoo, they let it go into a lake or stream, where it will eventually freeze to death or starve.................

Likely an illegal pet alligator that got too big and was released. If they don’t find it, winter will kill it.

They need Florida Man.

From a FR post a few months ago.

Video: Man wrangles gator on Jacksonville road

Totally worth it, short vid at the link. Dude has it going on. I love it when he holds the gator with one hand/arm while fishing his electrical tape out of his pocket, and getting it started, so he can tape the mouth closed, with the other.
