Large Fires Burning in Atlanta-Gen. Hood's Purposes Unknown.
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Saturday, Aug. 6.
A letter dated one mile from Atlanta, on July 31, from a prominent officer there to another here, says:
"Fires are now burning in Atlanta. They indicate that Gen. HOOD is destroying a large amount of property; but whether with a view to the evacuation of the place or not is unknown."
Correspondence of the Cincinnati Gazette.
NEAR ATLANTA, Ga., Friday, July 29.
CHASSEZ.
A week ago to-day the Army of the Tennessee lost its beloved Commander in the great battle southeast of the walls of the Gate City. Yesterday the invincible army confronted the same city on the southwest, and again fought with a steadiness which certainly has never been excelled in the history of the war. At midnight on the 26th, the Sixteenth Corps, from the extreme left, marched toward the right. It was immediately followed by the Seventeenth Corps, and it by the Fifteenth. By four o'clock of the 27th, the advance of Gen. DODGE's command began to go into position on the right of JEFF. C. DAVIS' division, Fourteenth Corps. Gen. MORGAN's brigade of this division was formed in column of attack on the right of Gen. DAVIS' line, to aid in taking position. Gen. CORSE's division was placed next -- Col. RICE's brigade first, and Lieut.-Col. PHILLIPS' brigade next. Gen. FULLER's division, which was a little delayed in getting up, formed still on the right -- Col. SPRAGUE's brigade first, and Lieut.-Col. MCDOWELL's on the right. When all was ready, Gen. MORGAN moved forward and easily drove in the rebel skirmishers. The brigades on his right moved up in turn, each clearing its front of the rebel pickets, and meeting with no loss of consequence.
