Belgium's Olympic team forfeited from Monday's mixed competition triathlon after one of its triathletes, Claire Michel, became sick after swimming in the Seine last Wednesday — a river that's faced frequent water quality and safety concerns.
"The Belgian Hammers will not start in the Mixed Relay competition at the Paris Games," the Belgian team said in a release. "Michel, one of the athletes in the mixed relay team, unfortunately has to withdraw from the competition due to illness."
While the Olympic team did not describe Michel's illness nor blame the Seine, Belgium newspaper De Standaard reported that the triathlete was hospitalized and treated for an E. coli infection Sunday. The bacteria can cause serious intestinal and medical issues.

Cities used to try to outdo one another in putting on the games.
Now they seem to in competition to make them both dangerous and pointless.
Swimming in a toilet can do that.
Muzzies crapping in the river?
No the streets and alleys. Plus the dogs, animals, homeless …. The storm drains go to the river. Same basic issue.
Hubby was thrilled watching that US gal just totally outrun the rest of the field in some bike race today, so I joined him for the end. To get to the finish line they rode across a bridge across the Seine, the water was brown. Totally brown, it looked like mud.
E-Coli is no joke. Makes me cringe just thinking about people swimming in nasty water.
How fitting.
That’s right.
I believe most likely, yes.
I know how you feel.
These people think they can control the climate of the entire world.
The Olympics are anachronistic and pointless. Time to abolish them before some tran trash kills a woman. That, or the water.
Why are they swimming in the river, especially one that flows through a big city and is certain to be polluted? I thought Olympic water sports were held in swimming pools.
triathlon - An athletic contest in which participants compete without stopping in three successive events, usually long-distance swimming, bicycling, and running.
Triathletes swim 2.2 miles. That’d be really boring in a lap pool.
They could have relocated the triathlon to a cleaner river, or the same river nearer the coast
It would be like NY City hosting the Olympics and having triathletes swim in the East River
With all those “logs” floating in the Seine they should have had an Olympdic Lumberjack Roll event.
I looked up where London did their triathlons since they also have a river flowing through the city. It turns out they held it in Hyde Park where there is a lake called the Serpentine. The swimming part was a lap of it so back and forth across it I assume. No mention of any problems in the wiki article on it. This event could have been held I’m sure in a number of locations around France much better than the filthy Seine.
They’re asking these champions to swim through a sewer. What kind of IDIOTS decided to hold the event in such a polluted cesspool?
