So....

In the Civil War, when Grant took command of all US forces, he changed things. He went on the offensive everywhere and all at once to push the Confederates to limit and prevent them from concentrating forces. It was bloody, it wasn’t considered elegant by all the ‘smarter generals and historians’ but it was extremely effective.

Russia is killing untrained, poorly armed, and inexperienced recruits likely at staggering rates. No, nobody will ever know how many people the Russians will ‘waste’ in the war in Ukraine. Traditionally, you must have a 3:1 advantage to do effective operations, probably 6-10:1 with inexperienced soldiers. Hence the appreciation of ‘wave’ attacks. Losses of the Russians versus the Ukrainians are likely appallingly enormous as well.

The thing is the Russians have ALWAYS been willing to make that sacrifice. They are a stubborn people who cope with slaughter well, and will see things to the end. Like Grant, Putin will continue with a Universe of War pushing Ukraine’s resources until they fail or Ukraine gets enough airpower to change the land war.

My Grandfather escaped from Russia. His father served in the Czar’s band so was considered a ‘White Russian.’ His earliest memory was running down the street with his mother holding his hand with one hand & his brother’s hand with her other hand. Their village thatched roof farm home was in flames behind her.

His father, him and his brother made it to work in the mines to earn passage for his mother & two sisters. No child labor laws.

When his mom and sisters finally were re-united in the U.S., his mother spoke to him in Russian. He did not respond or answer her. She cried saying he had forgotten her.
Instead, my young grandfather said: “I am an American.”

He serving in WWI for two years to earn his U.S. Citizenship.

The Old Tsarist Russian Empire
which Vlad the Invader hopes to reconstitute under Russkiy Mir:

I think you've mythologized Russians way too much.
The truth is that since 1900 Russia has lost more wars than it won including:

  1. 1905 Russo-Japanese War
  2. 1914-1917 First World War
  3. 1939-1940 Winter War Invasion of Finland
  4. 1979-1989 Invasion of Afghanistan
Of course, the Old Soviets won "The Big One, WWII", but only with massive aid from the US and Britain, along with the second, third and fourth fronts in Asia, Africa, Italy and France.
Soviets lost nearly 15% of their 1940 population in WWII.

And wars that Russians lose almost always result in internal revolutions against the old regime.

  1. Loss of the Russo-Japanese War caused a democratic revolution in Russia.
  2. Loss of the First World War caused the Communist Revolution.
  3. Loss of the Winter War resulted in additional purges of Soviet generals which so weakened Stalin's army that it was not prepared for Hitler's 1941 invasion.
  4. Loss of the Afghanistan War resulted in collapse of the Old Soviet Union, which Vlad the Invader is now hoping to reconstitute.
Indeed, I've even heard it claimed that the Biden administration doesn't want a Ukrainian victory over Russia because that would cause another collapse of Russia, which could only benefit... {wait for it}... China!

They say that's why we see the currently insane policy of dribbling just enough aid to keep Ukraine in the fight, but never enough to actually win the war.

I don't know if it's true or is simply people claiming a virtue from what is really just necessity.
