Russia is redeploying air defenses to shield a key bridge used by Russia to connect with the annexed Crimean Peninsula that Ukraine has long targeted, according to a Crimean-based pro-Ukrainian group.

"The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation began to massively transfer equipment closer to the Kerch Bridge," Atesh, a pro-Kyiv military partisan group of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars, said in a post to messaging app Telegram on Thursday.

Moscow is "actively redeploying the surviving air defense installations, aircraft, radars and all military facilities from the western part of Crimea," it continued.

-snip-

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted high-value Russian facilities and assets in the peninsula, such as its advanced air defense systems, radars, air bases and naval vessels.

"The Russians are in dire need of air defense systems," the Atesh movement said. "They are able to cover only one area of the peninsula."

Hasn’t Putin died of cancer already?
He’s about to beat Yuri Andropov’s record for the deadest man alive.

Vlad doesn’t need the bridge. They now have the roads and have built a rail road line in record time all the way to Marioupol ( not mentioned by the western MSM.)

The bridge is now for the civilian population of Crimea. Crimea is Russian, and will always be.

The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) reported that in a survey conducted from May to June 2024 with 3,075 Ukrainian respondents, 32% stated that some territory could be conceded to achieve peace as soon as possible while maintaining independence.

By the end of 2023, that figure had risen to 19%, reaching 26% in February and 32% in May 2024, more than tripling since the early days of the conflict.

The irony is, Putin started this war to claim Crimea for its navy, but had to transfer its Black Sea Fleet out of Crimea because it can’t defend it.

Sevastopol has had a Russian naval base since Ukraine was created in 1991.

Sevastopol has had a Russian naval base since Catherine the Great seized Crimea from the Turks in 1783.

Putin invaded Ukraine in February 2022 because Donetsk City was close to being overrun by the AFU.

Since Russia was a part of the Soviet Union during that era, the base in Crimea was Soviet, not Russian actually.

The base in Crimea was Soviet, after 1922, AND part of the Russian Empire, before 1917.

No, the irony is that we fomented an illegal coup in Ukraine in 2014 to cut Russia off from a naval base in had operated since before the US Constitution was written.

Funny, but it doesn't really operate as a naval base now. All of the big ships have left for other Russian ports further distant from Ukraine.

Like all the rest of the old Soviet arsenal, the inventory of Air Defense systems is running down, as losses far outstrip new production.

Putin has been blowing a fortune on his war of choice in Ukraine, but like the old Soviet arsenal he inherited, Russian financial assets are also not unlimited.

According to Jason Jay Smart, “Russia is now facing a quagmire: Let up on government spending, triggering cuts in social spending that could hurt Putin’s popularity, or should the Kremlin keep printing rubles, seeking to “bail out” their damaged economy, but thereby creating wider inflation?”

Tomorrow (26 July), the Russian Central Bank meets again, to address the growing inflation in Russia, and they are expected to hike their interest rates further.

Putin’s reign is already worse than Jimmy Carter, for crushing interest rates. Unlike Carter however, Putin’s inflation is not from externally induced oil shocks, but his own destructive choices.

Putin did that.
