Shoplifting has spiked across the country so far this year — even as many major crimes like homicide dropped back to pre-pandemic levels, a major national crime study showed.
Rates of shoplifting rose an average 24% during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to the Council on Criminal Justice’s (CCJ) Mid-Year Crime Report released Thursday.
The study reviewed crime statistics from 23 cities across the US, finding shoplifting has steadily been on the rise since the country began emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic around 2022.
Shoplifting has gotten lots of attention in recent years, as alarming videos have spread online showing gangs of hooligans staging brazen “smash-and-grabs” where they overwhelm a store and make off with armloads of goods at once. Others show thieves flagrantly snatching merchandise time and time again.
The problem has become so prevalent across the country that pharmacies and big box stores have begun locking up their aisles up with barriers to curb thievery — much to the frustration of honest customers.
Ernesto Lopez, a senior researcher with CCJ who helped compile the report, noted that a sharp increase could come in part because stores are reporting shoplifting more frequently due to the heavy attention on the problem.

They’re not just stealing from stores. By proxy, they are stealing from YOU (via higher prices).
Just another redistribution pathway albeit not overt.
Walmart still gets its money, the poor get free stuff, and the middle class gets squeezed.
Speaking of Amazon, my last two orders didn’t even ship for two weeks! Once UPS rec’d the packages, they moved quickly. I wonder if Prime subscribers are still getting two-day delivery. . . .
The best case I saw was mom and dad letting daughter pick out her tricycle. They then cleared the way while the little darling pedalled her way to their van.
You'd think that with all those tent shops being closed the months between Independence Day and New Years that stealing skyrockets would be minimal if at all.
I guess thieves gotta' thieve.
Sounds like you need to move. Hardly anything is ever locked up where I live.
IIRC, it’s all good if you keep it under $975 in CA.
So they say!!! (lolzzzz)
I started seeing the blatant theft about 6 months ago at Walmart, Grocery Outlet, Safeway...
It’s everywhere and I never noticed it before
You’re right. Unreported crime plus the decriminalization of several crimes probably account for any decline in criminality.
KAMALA wants Corp taxes to rise to 35%.
Joe ONLY wanted 28% Current is 21%.
Bankruptcies are so high that courts cannot process them quickly enough.
“Across the US” == CA and NY
Sometimes that happens with non-Amazon sellers.
We order a lot from Amazon, have Prime, and it comes within two days usually.
An absolute bald-faced lie. Significantly fewer jurisdictions are reporting crimes now than were reporting previously, and most of those that no longer report them are high-crime Democrat jurisdictions.
Some places you can do all the crimes you wish at night because LE closes up shop and goes home.
It is the uptick of the resale cottage industry on Amazon and Ebay.
Democrats got to steal ..it’s in their culture.
Yeah, let’s see the data by zip code ...
"Hello police? Someone is breaking into my home. Please send help." Police: "No officers are available to respond at this time."
Burglary where I live:
"Hello? Metro Waste Authority? I've just shot two burglars. Do I call the police or can I just put the bodies on the curb for garbage pickup?"
