The Most Common Recurring Dreams — and What They Mean
Better Report ^ | 07/23/2024

Dreams are absurd and unpredictable. However, while we each have our unique dream experiences, there’s a lot of commonality in what we dream about. Many of us share the same feelings of desire, nostalgia, and stress that are often the root cause of so many dreams — but why do we often get the same dream repeatedly? Here are the most common recurring dreams and what they might mean.

Being Chased

More than 50% of people experience these unpleasant dreams. Being chased in a dream may mean you’re avoiding something important in real life, or that you’re refusing to accept something you disagree with. If you’re the one doing the chasing, it may mean you feel like you’re falling behind in life and need to catch up.

I have similar dreams - I’m in a city - usually at night and I look around and the city is so beautiful - as if every brick in the streets and buildings was laid by hand by an artist who loved his work. Then I realize this city is too beautiful to exist and I wake up with that longing to go back.

1) Teeth falling out.

2) Need to get to a destination in a hurry but obstacles keep materializing keeping me from getting there.

3) Back at my dream job (that I was fired from) but I dont have my work badge and I have to keep sneaking through doors. No one seems to notice. Wake up depressed when I realize it's a dream.

Funny to me that people say they have recurring dreams. I never do, all of my dreams are brand new and one of a kind. And they're always so good that I want to go back to them...

Like I said before, I consider that a blessing.

My wife has those a lot, bathroom is full or filthy. I do too, sometimes. My recurring dream is I can’t get to where I’m trying to get to. Every path leads somewhere, but not where I want.

The most reoccurring one that I have (that I can remember when I wake up) is either high school or university where I am almost late for a class, but I can’t remember which class it is (and in the high school one, the same, but I can’t find my locker before I get to the class I can’t remember which one it is..).. o.O

The other one is mostly me back in Japan (normal day with my friends), and all of the dream is in Japanese (always kanji in the background (so don’t let anyone tell you that dreams aren’t in color, or that you can’t see characters (alphabet/kanji/hiragana/katakana), because I have, many times.

I wake up depressed that I’m not back in Japan :^(

Wow - that bathroom dream is my most common dream! I’m surprised I haven’t wet the bed! 😲 So far so good!

There is a lot of theory from neuropsychologists that seem to fit fell with our current understanding of the brain. Conscious thought is governed by executive function. You can consciously choose to avoid, suppress, confront, or solve. But conscious thought and executive function can only be processed one thing at time and is limited to specific cortical regions largely the frontal cortex. There is a whole lotta brain mass more than these regions. The limbic system and basal ganglia are deep cortical structures. Theory is this is subconscious which it always active as the brain processes multiple process at once.

Theory is that the subconscious is always working away and when executive function dictates its time to consider it comes into the frontal cortex. In other words we can only deal with one things at a time consciously. When we sleep the executive function also sleeps. But the subconscious can’t make sense and orderly interpret information logically. The subconscious is merely unprocessed data and speaks in metaphors that make no sense.

For example I have noticed over the years that when not in emotional turmoil if I have a problem to solve when I sleep on it the next morning the solution is crystal clear. Some authors have written on tapping the subconscious to become highly effective. It seems to work but it requires a well regulated emotional state. Particularly avoidant people will often suppress things that the we know logically are important or urgent and keep if from being logically acted on.

Largely dreams are the subconscious warning or solution to a problem. But they emanate from deep cortical structures. For example the amygdala and basal ganglia. These areas are purely emotional (the id according to Freud). These are the base raw emotional centers. Its language is fear, terror, sensuality, and all purely emotional. Dreams simply allow us the look at problems freed of the ego (executive function) and gives us a glimpse through imagery into the emotions that are suppressed by logic.

I’ve often continued dreams from one night to the next to see what happens. Melatonin gives me some bizarre dreams.

>>>the city is so beautiful - as if every brick in the streets and buildings was laid ***by hand by an artist who loved his work***. Then I realize this city is too beautiful to exist<<<

Keep an eye on your dreams. You were given a vision of pure truth, beyond what you realized...

Matthew 19
24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

The usage background of the statement is that a person isn’t going to dream of that which he can’t even envision in the first place:

>>>

How will you know the thoughts of your heart? By their being revealed to you in a dream. Rava said: Know that this is the case, for one is neither shown a golden palm tree nor an elephant going through the eye of a needle in a dream. In other words, dreams only contain images that enter a person’s mind.

https://www.sefaria.org/Berakhot.55b.21?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en

<<<

How does that makes sense? People dream of kooky, impossible things all of the time.

It makes simple sense if those are real-life *doing* dreams.

The consensus “Can’t Do” establishment mindset of “that’s impossible” will rule the day, until that someone who’d been mocked by the same crowd presses on anyway, demonstrating otherwise.

Then when there’s no denying, they’ll all want to glom on to enjoy the benefits of the dreamer’s vision, the mustard seed that they belittled and then tried to poison even as it kept right on growing.

(Why’s it growing so big? That’s impossible. We must kill it then.)

As for the fate of the rich man... necessity is the mother of invention, so the man who already has everything has no need to dream, no need to do anything differently.

Usually.

If something looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Usually.

>>>the city is so beautiful - as if every brick in the streets and buildings was laid by hand by an artist **who loved his work**<<<

Something to do with the indomitable Spirit of the endeavor.

With God all things are possible. ❤️

MAGA

I used to dream I had murdered someone and hid the body, and it was about to be discovered. I had no idea who I had murdered or why.

Interesting.

I do know there are times that I resolve something in my sleep. I wake up the next day and immediately realize the answer to something that was baffling me before.

I often have car dreams. Mostly, I’m in a car - usually one I owned in the past - and the damn thing will not go forward. Only backward and applying the brakes do not work.

I have dreams where I am back in high school, in a class. During the dream, I then remember that I not only graduated from high school, but also from college. That is when I get up, leave the class, and walk the halls of the school, trying to leave.

My recurring dream is that I somehow was back in the army in Baumholder after years of being out and someone stole my boots. Most of the dream is spent searching for my boots. I’ve had that one dozens of times.
