In the event that Biden resigns or is removed from office, Vice-President Kamala Harris ascends to the presidency.
The position of vice-president then becomes vacant, and the next in line is Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.
We know the normal process for selecting a veep: Presidential nominee chooses a vice-president at the convention; then, voters elect the "ticket".
However, what is the process for naming a new vice-president between election cycles?
Can the "sitting" president just install whomever they want, or is approval from congress needed, like with Supreme Court justices, cabinet members and other appointments?
As I recall (I was very young at the time), when Spiro Agnew resigned as Nixon's VP, congress had to approve his replacement, Gerald Ford.
Could someone enlighten us on the Constitutional process?

Yes. Congress has to approve. If no one approved, and something happens to Kamala…. Can you sau, “President Mike Johnson” for 6 months.

From the 25th Amendment:
Section 2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.
Hillary wants to be the first female President, so it will be interesting to see how she disrupts the whole thing in her favor.
Unlike her, I hope she picks someone who still has a least one neuron firing in their head.
If Joe steps down (I don’t think he will) then this is another reason why Hillary can make an appearance. Congressional approval would be a bit of a no-brainer. I don’t think she’s a good choice, of course, but she has a long history and has been vetted by the people who do the vetting. I don’t see Congress suddenly finding a reason to reject her.
And then President Harris would need a food taster.
Richard Nixon was the first to do so. When Spiro Agnew resigned, he got congressional approval to put Gerald R. Ford in the vacant office. Ford did likewise when he was elevated to the presidency following Nixon's resignation.
Anyone who appoints Hillary as VP should just kill themselves immediately—avoid the stress of waiting for Hillary to do it later.
How many horses will be killed to fill the beds of anyone who would dare stand in her way?
If Joe resigns, Kamala would appoint a VP. That choice would need to be approved by a majority of the HOUSE and Senate.
If the 25th is invoked, the VP becomes “acting President.” Biden would remain as President and there would be no change in succession.
If Joe just doesnt run, and Kamala is the nominee, she can pick her running mate.
If and it is a big if Kamala becomes President I doubt the Republican would vote for a replacement, mainly because the election is so close and second if something happened to Kamala the speaker of the house becomes President.
I think Kamala would rather have the threat of a Republican replacing her then a Democrat selected by the elites, she would be safer.
She wants to be Queen of America.

Yikes, hopefully Congress complies with her choice.

There was no Constitutional mechanism to do so until the 25th Amendment, which is why the office was left vacant until the following election cycle.
The Constitution was amended in 1967 to reflect the “new” process for replacing the Vice President. Nixon/Agnew was the first time it was applicable.
So, Republicans in congress could stall on approving Kamala's choice for veep, and Johnson is next in line?
Cool--not president Kamala, but president Johnson for a few months. I can live with that until Trump is inaugurated.
WHAT A TWIST THIS IS.
All those other presidents prior to Nixon, who had a vacancy in the vice presidency, all happened before the 25th Amendment was enacted, which happened in 1967.
It’s not that they didn’t see fit to fill the vacancy. It was that there was no provision in the law or Constitution at that time to do so.
Kamala’s problem is that she’s not eligible to be President so if they try that route there’s going to be an army of lawyers creating a fog around the whole thing. It will be a mess.
