Saturday Computer Question
Me | 7/20/2024 | Paul R.

Posted on 07/20/2024 4:25:06 PM PDT by Paul R.

Geez, is there some requirement an OP must repost / reply in under an hour? Some of us actually have lives!! And I needed to look at the computer again to get info. for replies, and it was, ya' know, not right at my fingertips.

Anyway, here goes AGAIN:

I've inherited a huge gaming computer from my brother. It seems to turn on ok, except that there is no video from either the Motherboard or the dedicated graphics card. Once the computer is on, the CPU gets warm, the RAM gets warm, the dedicated graphics card gets warm, controls for fan speed (four fans!) appear to work, but there is no indication from either the VGA output or HDMI output on the motherboard, and none from the dedicated graphics card. I even tried the MB video outputs with the dedicated graphics card pulled out of the machine. The monitor I'm using for this runs fine off my laptop (both HDMI and VGA.)

The CMOS battery was dead, but I replaced it. The HD seems to be spinning, but doesn't seem to do searches across the disk, etc. (It is a 1 TB HD, not a SSD.) I'd still think I should see an initial BIOS message on the monitor even if the HD is defective? Oh, BTW, RAM is 32 GB of DDR3, 4 sticks of 8 GB. The DVD player / writer "ejects" and "loads" (no disc in there) but I can't get much further than that without an OS.

If the power supply checks, I would go with post #50.

Needs proper and good ram to get the beep

Use the spkr out to a small spkr if it is not in a case

hope you get it

I just wonder: The manual seems to indicate 4GB max per stick. These are 8 GB. But, the Mem Test says its’s ok.

I tried a small speaker that uses a 1/8” stereo plug, connected to the “front speaker” output. But, those speakers actually use USB power. I’ll try passive headphones.

The RAM test function SEEMS to work.

This MoBo has a “VGA-SWITCH CARD” in it. Label says “something” must be in that slot. I’m not seeing anything about it in the manual I downloaded.

Will do. I’d not disconnect quite that many things. :-)

If the green power LED on the MoBo is lit, is the PS likely ok? Put another way, does it monitor all PS rails (at least as of where they hit the MoBo?

I must admit, I’ve never been “in” a home pc with a 850 watt power supply!

use the spkr connection on the board where the power and reset pins are

For older PCs, the diagnostic beeps typically are sent only to the 4-pin header on the mobo for an internal speaker, not to the audio jack on the outside panel. (Newer PCs sometimes can do it.)

From your description (red LED goes out), the memory appears to be okay.

I had assumed that you unplugged the graphics card as a first step?

See page 2-20. The page says if you want full PCIe x16 speed you need to insert it, otherwise the GPU will use only PCIe x8.

Don't worry about any of that right now. Just see if you can boot to the OS without the graphics card.

Ummmm, I know the manuals try to be a bit conservative. You might want to confirm the 4GB vs 8GB. There are other websites that can give you guidance. On my machine, I tried to put higher speed memory than what the manufacturer called for and it wasn’t until I got the type and speed they called for that my computer worked. And it took me about a month to figure it out!

I tried both the headphone and front speaker outputs into known good headphones. No beep.

The manual does not indicate any speaker on the MoBo. The 10 pin front panel audio connector on the MoBo seems to go to the jacks in the top front of the computer.

Will try the “disconnect almost everything” after supper.

The manual does not indicate any speaker on the MoBo.

See page 2-37, System warning speaker: "This 4-pin connector is for the chassis-mounted system warning speaker. The speaker allows you to hear beeps and warnings."

Ah, THAT is useful! I only knew about half of ‘em.

Note: Your link works in Chrome but not in Brave.

And I have at least 8 multimeters. :-) Some are specialized, like the Fluke 8060A’s get used mostly for audio work, but are also my most accurate meters.

Oh, I see that connector - mistook as being the 10 pin job, which is actually on the other side of the MoBo. Should have counted. The speaker must be hidden up by the audio in & outs in the top-front (or maybe it’s really the front-top.)
In any event, it ain’t-a-beepin.

Will check PS voltages after supper. :-)

I think that they should go to a small speakerl in front panel.
The 1/4” is usually for onboard audio

Noted, however, trying with the graphics card pulled was in my OP (thread starter). No go.

Next I think is pulling everything possible not essential to booting, and trying to boot, and, checking actual power supply voltages.

Note: When powering up, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock on the keyboard both flash, then go out. A bit later, Num Lock comes on and stays on until I hit the key to turn it off. Green pwr LED on MoBo lights and stays lit. Mem test LED checks ok.

Wow!   Who couldn't figure out how to replace a power supply?   If I could do it anybody could.

“”””And it took me about a month to figure it out!””””

It is good to know that I’m not the only one who sometimes has to keep gnawing at this stuff for incredible lengths of time trying to figure it out.
