Of the 18 people whom state and local public health experts were able to interview, 16 reported eating meats sliced at a deli in the month before they got sick. There are no reports of people getting sick after eating packaged deli meat.
It’s not exactly clear what meat is to blame for the listeria in this outbreak, the CDC says. The CDC and the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service are investigating, but no recalls have been issued.
Most people who were sick reported eating turkey or liverwurst, and some reported eating ham. The meat came from a variety of grocery store delis. Tests using DNA fingerprinting showed that the bacteria from sick people was genetically similar, suggesting that they probably caught the bacteria from the same food.
The timeline of this outbreak stretches over several months, the CDC said. The first person got sick at the end of May, and the most recent case reported being sick on July 5.

4 sentence paragraphs and no mention of ***where***...
TIMBUKTO???? CAIRO???? CINCINNATI??? WHERE??
Was about to say the same - great job, CNN!
Bring on the manufactured slime.
No one should be eating meat. /s
One batch of contaminated, say, ham could contaminate deli slicing machines, and slicing subsequent meats would contaminate them.
They take the slicer apart and thoroughly clean it at the end of they day, but never between every meat/cheese order.
WHERE? Not one word in the ENTIRE article of WHERE. Needs to be a Farside comic of journalists saying, “Let’s see how much mayhem we can create today.”
The CDC link needs hits. LOL
Why in the hell would it take months for people to become ill, how long did they have the deli meat in their refrigerators???
It’s deliberate, they want people everywhere to live in fear.
If they reported Duluth (for example) people in Savanna wouldn’t worry. Gotta scare everyone, everywhere, all the time.
Fear sells.
It didn’t take months for people to get sick. The way I read it is it took months for enough people to have gotten sick, for doctors to have reported it, for the CDC to collate and correlate the data to identify an outbreak (somewhere), to track down the various delis and their meat sources, etc.
I imagine that’s got to be a tough job. You start getting reports of people getting sickened. Is it natural? Is there a common cause or link between them? How many people need to get sick? What is the required physical and temporal proximity?
Obviously you don’t want to issue a false alarm.
Immunopeptidomics-based design of mRNA vaccine formulations against Listeria monocytogenes
Great. Both Duluth and Savanna are in affected states.
Pulled them out of thin air, two guesses, two hits.
I’m spooky that way.
Listeria is especially harmful to people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or with weakened immune systems. CDC always recommends people at higher risk for listeriosis avoid eating meats sliced at the deli or heat them to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot before eating.Fortunately I'm not a "people who are pregnant" (damn modern language), but I AM over 65 and have some minor immune problems.
“are advised to avoid eating deli meat unless it’s been heated until it steams or reaches an internal temperature of 165 F”
IOW, cooked into tasteless charcoal patties ...
Excellent! That narrows it down, for sure!! /S
BTW, anyone notice if their grocery store deli meats are at or above the cost of, say, Hillshire Farms packaged deli meats? My Publix deli meats are more expensive (but better).
Walmart around here has down-sized their delis and carry half the stuff they did before, but are still cheaper, but don't carry what I want (like havarti).
Screw them I LOVE my roast beef RARE, CDC is incompetent bunch of keystone cops just like every other branch of the government BEAST!! I honestly don’t know how in the hell we survived back in the day WITHOUT all of these bureaucrats telling us and WARNING us about what the hell to do each day!!
Walmart has packaged Harvarti in the cheese section, I buy it all the time!!
