Ezra Klein: So last week on the show, I made the argument that Democrats should pick a candidate at the convention this year. That Joe Biden is capable of doing the job of president but that his campaign is not going well, that it is not clear, to me, at least, that he is capable of running successfully for president.
This is the way political parties throughout most of American history have picked their nominees for president. But it’s a funny kind of suggestion, because it is somehow simultaneously novel and ancient.
So what I wanted to do today was talk through how conventions work — how an open convention works, what kind of politicking happens at it, what kinds of candidates win, how they win and also talk through what would happen this year. I mean, what if Biden dropped out in April? What if he dropped out in July or August? How does that change it? What happens if he drops out before delegates are selected? What happens if after? All these things create very different dynamics.

Now let me ask you about a different timeline here. Let’s say it is Aug. 1. The primaries are over. The delegates are selected, committed primarily now to Joe Biden, and Joe Biden has a health event or just realizes that he can’t do this. It’s not for him right now. And he steps down. What happens then so close to the convention?
Kamarck: Well, at that point, you have 4,000-and-some people who are already elected delegates on their way to Chicago. And I think that other people will throw their hat in the ring, and they’re going to have to convince those delegates in convention, because there’s not much time, right?
So you will have what you had in the old days. Delegations will meet in their hotels, and the candidates will go from hotel to hotel, or their surrogates, talking to the delegations and trying to get support. You would have the wives or the husbands being surrogates. You’d have other surrogates going to the smaller state delegations.
And in the meantime, of course, you’d have a wild social media campaign going on. You’d have polling going on. You’d have all the other things going on. It’d be pretty wild. You might need another day for the convention because there’d be so much work to do.
And odds are you’d have to go beyond one ballot for somebody to get the nomination. Odds are you’d need a first ballot just to figure out where everybody was, and then you’d probably take a break before you had your second ballot.
It would be pretty wild. I think for political reporters, Ezra, it would be the most fun of your whole life, and you’d love it. I think the voters would be absolutely tuned in to their televisions. This would be great reality TV, if you will. It would be reality politics.
Agree - the Dems need to totally unmask and let the world see them in all their glory.
I think that the premise that such a thing would “work” at all is questionable. Watching them try it should be entertaining.
Joe won the primaries.
Joe has all the delegates pledged to him.
Joe has a huge campaign fund.
Joe says he’s not leaving the race.
But the people who are always so concerned about threats to “Our Democracy” are trying to stage a palace coup and then manipulate events at the convention so they can hand-pick a particular person.

The entire solution is very simple! The replacement candidate has already been chosen. They were chosen some time ago in a smokey back room by the deep state. There! Now the only problem (oops, I mean chalange) (Newspeak) is which method of stealing the election will be best.
They have an extreme problem. If Joe does end up quitting the race, the Republicans must demand he step down from the presidency due to his significant frailties and ill health.
As VP, it is Kamala Harris’ job to take over the presidency. How do they square that and somehow demand she not run or have an open convention where they push another candidate? Why is it that this woman of color whom was put on the ballot with Joe Biden for VP is not good enough to run in an election for President? Is it because she is female or a woman of color or not smart enough? The leftists need to answer those questions, and the conservatives need to demand those answers.
This is at the feet of the media, White House staff and Democratic leaders. The idea Joe isn’t in severe decline and incapable of being President was on full display at the debate. The Democrats and press/ media lied to the American people for years covering for Joe’s senility. One of the best gaslighting jobs in history. There was coordinating between White House press corp and Biden’s staff. Joe was given cheat sheets with what reporter to call on, in what order and what question he was to be ask. Primaries were rigged so Joe was never challenged. The disgusting part is the sycophants that got the Democrats and Joe to this point do not care about Joe, or the potential damage of putting a senile person in charge would do to America. The gaslighting was so complete George Clooney raised $30 million for Joe Biden with no qualms. The carefully crafted efface of “the best Joe Ever” fell apart at the debate. Clooney, the press/meds etc. have now decided Joe must be replaced. Where were these A holes a year ago?

It’s about their own racism and sexism. It’s not about how much of a crazy leftist Kamala would be as a president…they are all crazy power hungry leftists. However, if they pass her up as the candidate when she is in the position for this very scenario, now why would they have to do that?
The leftists would have to answer those questions and they can’t. They’re in disarray.
