WASHINGTON, Saturday, July 16.
Information has been received here direct from Loudon Valley to the effect that the rebel force, on its retreat from Maryland and Washington, is moving down that valley toward Gordonsville.
The rebels seem to be marching rapidly.
Our forces, who are in pursuit, captured Gen. BRADLEY JOHNSON, near Edward's Ferry, but he was subsequently rescued by a bold dash of his own cavalry.
A soldier of the Sixty-seventh New-York Regiment was hanged yesterday at Poolesville as a spy.
Persons from near Manassas say that the rebels are not repairing the Manassas Railroad, as reported.
The Star extra says:
A force of rebel raiders, numbering between 350 and 500, passed through Little Washington, Sperryville, and Creighersville Thursday night on their way toward Madison Court-house and Gordonsville. They had 150 horses with them and 25 prisoners who were mounted upon the captured horses, which were led by the rebels.
The rebels passed Creighersville about 8 o'clock, and half an hour afterward a small force of Union cavalry from the West, who crossed the Shenandoah about CONRAD's store, made their appearance at the same place, and proceeded alter the rebels.
The latter gave out that they were making their way to Gordonsville, and thence to Richmond.
They seemed to be in a hurry, having received information that SHERIDAN was between them and Richmond, with a large cavalry force, "smashing things generally."
This rebel gang was doubtless part of the rebel forces lately operating in Maryland.
Gen. MCCOOK, Gen. PAYNE, and Gen. DOUBLEDAY have been relieved from duty in the Department of Washington.
Gen. MCCOOK will report to the Adjutant-General for instructions, and Gens. DOUBLEDAY and PAYNE will resume their positions on general Courts-martial.
Gen. HADDEN has been ordered to resume the command of his division

It's been that kind of a morning...I saw this and my first thought was, "No, they're not moving AGAIN..." then I realized it was Homer's daily news of the Civil War.
In the “Hotel Life in Richmond” on page 8, the prices seem exhorbitant for the mid-19th century. Is this because the Confederate dollars are losing value, or because the gourmet food supplies are very meager?
That. John Beauchamp Jones and other diarists comment frequently on how expensive everything has become in the Confederate dollars.
There are no resources for organized sports in the south. Baseball coverage is beginning to creep into the NYT, though. Still enough northern gentlemen out of uniform to man the teams.
Abner Doubleday?
Glad he survived.
