Speculations on the Late Raid-Retreat of the Enemy-Plundering Everywhere.
WASHINGTON, Friday, July 15.
Speculations continue to be made as to the number of rebels recently menacing this city, but there are no data by which to determine this question. From conversations with farmers from Montgomery County to-night, it appears that the fields for some miles were filled with the enemy, and that those who made the demonstration on our immediate front were only the advance of their army.
The intention was evidently to invade Washington, but the continuous arrival of troops in formidable numbers satisfied them that their design was not easily to be accomplished. There is no doubt that they were previously encouraged to this advance by many sympathizing friends, especially those who took pains to point out Union men for plunder, and who themselves suffered from the treachery of the rebels.
On their retreat through the upper portion of Montgomery County, the rebels swept off nearly all the horses and cattle, and many of them stole women's and children's clothing and other personal effects. The stores were also plundered. It is not positively known whether all the rebels have crossed the Potomac, the reports being conflicting. It is certain, however, that small parties of them have reentered Virginia, and are traveling with their plunder over the various roads leading through Loudon County toward Snicker's and Asby's Gaps. A large force of our troops is in pursuit. It is resorted that BRECKINRIDGE and staff were in Leesburgh on Wednesday morning, superintending the movements of the enemy. A number of their stragglers have been picked up by our troops.
