I was shocked that my pastor said nothing. It is a fairly conservative church in a very liberal, wealthy town full of influential people - many of them having some power to shape public discourse - not that those are necessarily church-goers.
But I expected prayers for peace, for the safety of leaders and candidates, for us as a nation to handle disagreements with reason, fairness, gentleness.
"Hey let's not let politics invade our religious life. Just stay calm and let the LGBTQ+ people exercise their civil rights on the newcomers. Don't be homophobic. Love is love."
Sheesh.
Yes, that’s exactly how it seemed to me too.
No mention by my pastor.
I was not happy with that. He ignores what is happening all the time.
The call to stop violence is not “talking politics”.
Why then do we pray for any one person or situation?
The degradation of our culture starts with what is in our heart.
The church must step up.
I can see no purpose hearing a message involving politics.
Jesus condemned no one except the church leadership who were heavily involved with politics.
My pastor has asked parishioners to come to church armed a few years ago. I am out of country at present, but I’m sure he asked everyone to pray for DJ!
You should have been at our church this morning. Our Pastor was on his knees and nearly cried at times while he gave an impassioned prayer.
And he is our Youth Pastor as our Senior Pastor was on vacation.
He sure did. California Corners, Michigan.
Our priest prayed for President Trump and for the other victims during the general intercessions.
I’m not talking about preaching a political sermon. No, the churches have gone to the extreme of remaining silent when obvious pure evil confronts them. There are people who rely on their pastors for guidance. You acknowledge that this is a spiritual battle, yes? Then how do you combat the spiritual when it manifests itself in the physical-more people need to hear that from there pastors as well.
Another note. Jesus condemned them as you say, he didn’t remain silent. He pointed out their hypocrisy as well as other aspects to those around.
My Pastor spoke about Daniel in the lions den and how the politicians of the day gamed the system to not only take Daniel out but to kill him, and that he wrote this sermon weeks ago so it had nothing to do with yesterdays events.
So yes, by accident, and nailed it lol. =)
Then you are attending the wrong “Protestant” churches.
ALL of the Protestant churches I have attended lately routinely pray for our President Trump, take the conservative position on the issues of the day and preach the Gospel@
Yes, our pastor spoke of it extensively and we all prayed for Trump and our nation.
In Long Beach, CA. At the end of the normal intentions in Mass, our priest mentioned the assasination attempt, asking for prayers for President Trump, the individual who was killed, the healing of those injured and for the unity of the United States. Very heartfelt.
I don’t go to church except for the occasional wedding or funeral, but I have been paying attention to people I meet and taking note of who talks about it and who doesn’t.
It irks me that so many people don’t seem to be thinking about it.. they are still talking about sports, the weather, vacation plans, what’s on the barbecue - not a word about a President nearly being killed.
I don’t understand it.
I haven’t been to church since the one I was going to retreated in fear from the
virus.
But, any pastor who cannot speak about the spiritual warfare going on in the world today is a false christian in my opinion.
I have been unchurched for over two decades.
My faith has never been stronger.
The Book of Revelation has Christ knocking at the door of his own Church.
Why?
Christ is not in the church in the last age of the church which is clearly now.
Our pastor, after the singing and before the sermon, said things just as you had thought should be said.
We live in a fallen world. And as Christians (a conservative church, but I’m sure plenty of Democrats attend too because of where it is located) - this is more than politics. It is our chance to show how to have a real conversation about ideas without resorting to shouting or rhetoric or violence. And pray for the leaders of our country - even the ones we may not like.
“Though hordes of devils fill the land, all threatening to devour us,
We will not fear, for God has willed His strength to triumph through us.”
“FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!”
Then, what are you talking about?
There are people who rely on their pastors for guidance.
In political realms? Do you honestly believe that a pastor has a better take on it than we lay people do?
If your pastor told you to vote for Mickey Mouse instead of Trump, would you do it?
If not, why not?
