Thanks for letting me share the story of how I first met my dog Flip because Sinatra the boxer reminds me so much of him. Want to help rehabilitate dogs with me?

>> No one is asking you to spend any of your tax dollars on animal shelters.

No, the county simply TAKES! my tax dollars WITHOUT asking and spends some of them on the local liberal-launched-and-run “shelter”. And they always want MORE MORE MORE of those tax dollars. Maybe you shouldn’t make sweeping proclamations about things that you simply don’t know, but assume.

>> I guess you would be fine with euthanizing every stray dog or cat found

You guess wrong.

One day a little stay tabby female cat showed up at my back kitchen sliding glass door and wouldn’t go away. I suspected she was abandoned when a family a few doors up moved out. But I wasn’t feeding her and tried shoeing her away several times, but she persisted.

She even cuddled up to our Huskey on the back deck as if to say “See I even I like dogs”.

So, I took her in and named her Zelda and she was the best cat ever.

The first night she came into the house, she laid down in the middle of the kitchen floor and I had to step over her while I was making dinner. Then every night for several weeks she’d wake me up in the middle of the night and pat my face until I woke up, and purr as if to say “I’m just checking on you to make sure you are OK”

My NextDoor app is full of dogs looking for homes, some owners are desperate, have to move and/or can’t afford them - dogs have been abandoned at local dog parks, along roadways, in the hills.

The price of dog (and cat) food has also soared.

Got a plea from the local animal shelter yesterday that they are overfull and to PLEASE consider fostering these dogs - some shelters are so desperate they post a photo of the dog with a caption such as “This Dog will be euthanized today at 5 PM unless someone fosters him!” Sometimes, the next day they will report that the dog was euthanized.

Heartbreaking, and this is every single day.

I wish I could take them all - I can’t so I donate to my local shelter, both food and money. There is also the infuriating problem of people refusing to spay or neuter their dogs, mostly pit bulls, which then end up in shelters.

Best dog we were privileged to have came from the “pound.” She was cowering in the back of the cage while all the other dogs jumped up and barked to see people. (Read later “you never pick a cowering dog”...) Abby was the BEST dog EVER. She has been gone 8 yrs now, but I still miss her.

I’m pretty sure your county gives very little of your tax dollars to fund your local “liberal launched-and-run shelters”. But do go on with your sad and angry animal hating self.

I’ve always felt rescue dogs know they’re rescued.

We’ve had several. Della protected our home, the kids and us with her life, she knew she was rescued. Riley was found running in the streets as a small pup and also protected us and our property as well, loved family, didn’t like strangers
- when we took him hiking, he would run back and forth to make sure everyone was OK as we spread out on the trail. He refused to move forward until everyone was accounted for. Poppy, our last rescue, refused to leave my lap if I was on the couch, all she wanted to do was cuddle after a life of neglect and abuse.

Can’t recommend rescues enough, they have worked out very well for our family.

Our beautiful rescue, Della, was also found cowering in the back of a cage - large, pure black, and had been there for a long time. When we took her, the “pound” was incredibly grateful to finally find her a home - they gave us donated food, collars, leashes, etc. I have a feeling she was slated for euthanasia very soon.

She was the best, most protective dog we’ve ever had.

My local shelter puts out notices once a week begging for donations, volunteers, food, blankets, anything to help.

Doesn’t look like they’re well funded at all.

Against my inclinations, I have become a cat person. I now understand how the little creatures work themselves into our hearts.

When I worked at the animal shelter I was paid by the pound.

What county is that? You know, right? So what county do I live in?

Okay, crazy furry-baby obsessed woman. I think you need those pets. I’m glad you have them to fill your... strange but giant and oh-so-demanding void. I prefer relationships with people, but you be you. Have a nice life.

Beware of any stray or rescue animal dog without knowing their lineage. I don’t care what the dog looks like, it may even appear to be a full blooded breed, that does not make it so. I have to admit some of my favorite rescues have been heinz 57’s I have also had some that were absolute nightmares. Recently I had to have a pet dog I have had over 3 years euthanized because of violent behavior with another dog. She snapped and almost killed my older dog, but this was not the first time. Dogs sometime become obsessive and/or jealous of their owners or rivalary over another dog. If you have any dog that displays snap behavior that results in a kill attack, they should be put down as they can not be trusted, ever. Next time it might be a young child they get jealous over. And make no mistake, a dog can do fatal damage in a matter of seconds even if you are standing right there to try and stop it or it may even turn on you.

Same here where I live. Struggling for funding, asks all the time for donations of food, blankets, toys, cat litter, and volumeters etc.

Unless you are a governor from a midwestern sate, then you just have to live with the pooch.

Had I not had the dog for 3 years and had become attached to her, the one way trip to the woods would have been an option. It was hard enough taking her on the one way trip to the vet.

I have many great relationships with family and many human friends and have a very nice life. I'm not a crazy furry-baby obsessed woman and currently have no pets. But you seem to be a sad and bitter person. I hope you one day get over it.

Against my inclinations, I have become a cat person. I now understand how the little creatures work themselves into our hearts.

I had an orange tabby who was polydactyl (I used to say that his extra toe was like an opposable thumb and it really was, I saw him use it to open doors and pickup things with it and such) and was crazy smart and super friendly. He sometimes acted more like a golden retriever than a cat. He loved to play fetch and do tricks and greeted me a the door when I came home. His name was Willie but I called him “Willie The Wonder Cat”.

I had a terrible week where within 2 days I came down with conjunctivitis so bad, the eye specialists my primary doctor sent me to wanted to put me in the hospital, I broke up with the man I was dating after I found out he was cheating on me, my new boss who didn’t know she was my new boss blew me off when I called in sick and I received my final divorce decree.

I was so sick, running a high fever, my eyes were swollen shut, but Willie never left my side. He snuggled up next to me and very gently stroked my forehead with his paw and put his other paw in my hand and squeezed it.

He wouldn’t eat or drink unless I went downstairs to the kitchen, and he followed me back upstairs after, never leaving my side until I got better.

He was really the most amazing cat. I still miss him.

Wow. Willie was quite a cat. Due to my former ignorance, I did not know that cats develop close bonds with their owners. When I went on a week long trip a few months ago, Buddy was so stricken by my absence that he stopped eating for several days. Now he stays near me as much as possible. When he goes out at night, he stays in the yard and comes running back in when I whistle.

I had a cat we named Moe that I got as a very young kitten from a co-worker whose husband found him on the roadside on his UPS route. Adorable kitten at first, even bonded with our dog but over time became increasingly aggressive.

He also had some strange habits like pulling my clothes and only my clothes out of the laundry hamper and “dry humping” them and this was after he was neutered.

It got to the point we had to keep our dog and him separated for the dog’s protection, and one day he stalked and growled and tried to attack my husband for no apparent reason, but I was the only person who could handle him, and he was so gentle and seemed to love me so I didn’t see the warning signs that something was seriously wrong with him.

Then one day he viciously attacked me when he smelled the scent of another cat on me. It was like movie Cujo and Fatal Attraction combined but with a cat. He was lunging at me and I swear he was trying to get to my throat to kill me. I’ve never been so scared of any animal before then.

It took hours for my husband and our next-door neighbor to corral him and get him into a kennel and take him to animal control late that night.

After a quarantine and because rabies was ruled out because he was up to date with his shots they asked if we wanted him back or to have him euthanized and we opted to have him put down. It was difficult but the right thing to do.

After I adopted Zelda, I asked our new vet about Moe. She said from what I described, it might have been that he was weened too early or that when our previous vet neutered him it wasn’t a complete job - if a neuter doesn’t completely remove all the tesites, it can result in them still having some male hormones and resulting in territorial and abnormal and aggressive behaviors and which can also lead to unwanted sexual behaviors like spraying and dry humping my clothes which he did, or that like some people, he was mentally ill or just plain evil.
