Thanks for letting me share the story of how I first met my dog Flip because Sinatra the boxer reminds me so much of him. Want to help rehabilitate dogs with me?

>> Do you think Jesus used this parable to mean finding the lamb was about the potential financial loss? Were the shepherd and his friends and family celebrating because of the money saved.
Yes I do believe it was about maintaining the flock that gave them their living. The companion parable right next to it is about simple lucre (coins).
This American obsession with pets is a relatively new thing, even for America.
>> Until all abortion and child abuse is ended, we are perfectly free to abuse all and any animals to our heart’s content. Is that the hill you want to stand on? Really?
No, because you’re employing the logical fallacy known as “false dichotomy” (or “false choice”).
Yes, when I pondered the question of “pets” in Scripture, that was the only example I could think of — the parable Nathan used to illustrate of David’s sin to him.
It’s also clear from Jesus’ direct communications with those he had contact with that dogs were not highly regarded in first century Jewish (or Roman, or Grecian) life. And simple history as well as scripture bears that out.
You are wrong. Humans have always had close relationships with pets. That's how dogs got domesticated to begin with...wolves became pets.
And guess when wolves became pets. It started as soon as humans discovered fire and started cooking over fire in wolf country.
Why do you and some other FReepers always connect pet stories with unborn babies.
Are you trying to shame people who
adopted a pet?
How do you know, how hard another FReeper fights, dedicate hard work and time for unborn babies ???
Cute pix!
They sure know what ‘chillin’ means.😄
There is a big difference between *having* pets and *obsessing* over them. And that obsessive-compulsive pet fever is relatively new.
Not all that long ago Americans in general simply could not afford to obsess over pets — and it’s still that way in most of the world.
The pet obsession, I believe, is at least in part due to replacing love of family and love of children with love of animals, as both child-raising and two-parent nuclear family life are under relentless progressive attack. How many times have you heard people refer to their “furry kids”?
I do love (most) animals and I have had pets, most recently a beloved kitty we had for seventeen short years. We’ll have others when the time is right. Still, I believe pet obsession a) absolutely exists in America and b) is neither psychologically nor spiritually healthy.
“It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.”(Matthew 15:26)The exact word Jesus used here, in Greek, was kunarion (κυνάριον), meaning “puppy” or “pet dog.” Jesus was referring to a pet under the table begging for a nibble.
This is a completely different word from the term kuon (dog), an insult.
>> Are you trying to shame people who adopted a pet?
No, of course not. Adopt away! Just don’t spend MY tax dollars on your shelters and so forth. And don’t try to shame me into working for or caring about or paying for your pet obsession, as the OP did (wo which I replied “No Thanks” and explained my position).
Is that an okay position to hold in your supposedly conservative universe?
I know you well enough to know that you do not intend to accuse regular folks who love animals of being guilty of obsessive-compulsive pet fever.
You are certainly correct that many Americans (on the Left) have gone bat guano crazy...and obsessive behavior is part of that. But that doesn't apply to normal people/Americans, like the ones on this thread who simply love animals.
Never trust anyone that doesn’t like dogs. Or that your dog doesn’t like.
Agree, the focus on animals has gotten way out of balance.
And I write that sitting here with my two dogs.
The ARL is is a money sucking scam that feeds of of people’s misplaced priorities .
You can keep your snarky remark and stick it, you-know-where!
The rest of your post doesn’t even make sense.
You give a wonderful description of a reputable hobby breeder, who cares enough about their puppies to take them back for any reason, and then tell people not to buy from a breeder? Buying a dog that you’re going to spend $thousands on over the course of its life should take a little thought and work, like thoroughly researching the breed including known health iasues, and the breeder who should be able to produce genetic and other test results that preclude those health issues as much as possible.
I have ended relationships with several girls that I thought were wonderful and perhaps marriage material...because my animals didn't like them and they didn't seem to like animals.
And guess who ended up being right? In every case, I eventually learned something about those "wonderful girls" that destroyed my previous impression.
At first, the cat seemed to be going feral again, scared at the sight of people. Over more than a year, he began to trust me enough to approach me, and then to come into the house for a few minutes at a time for a quick look around. The cat now spends 99% of his time indoors, sleeps on my bed, and is spoiled rotten.
Great story.:-)
No one is asking you to spend any of your tax dollars on animal shelters. While some may get some tax money to get strays off the streets or remove animals from dangerous situations, etc., most of their money comes from private donations and they are usually way underfunded.
I guess you would be fine with euthanizing every stray dog or cat found but that also costs money.
And no one is trying to “shame” you.
I think you shamed yourself all on your own.
We adopted our rescue pup who was 5 months old and had been on the streets.
Hes half Boxer and half German Shepherd and he’s a beautiful awesome dog in our pack family.
He was really rough for a bit but we put allot of time into his training.
Our family loves that dog - Kona. In fact my daughter calls to face time him LOL.
Adopt a dog, it will be the best friend you’ll ever have.
Thank you! I'm not in a good position to adopt a dog but have been looking at my local ASPCA to adopt a cat. I’ve been considering an older cat, even one with some health issues that needs their last forever home.
