Italian authorities put a stop to a network of slippery fraudsters who were selling fake oil by the truckload — with cops seizing 42 tons of packaged “extra virgin” worth $1 million.
On Monday, cops in southern Italy raided 18 garages and warehouses in the Puglia region and confiscated the oil — some of which had already been packed and ready for sale, according to CNN.
Police found 71 tons of what they referred to as an oily substance in plastic tanks — as well as 623 liters of chlorophyll, an extra-virgin olive oil ingredient that the shifty bandits were adding to cheaper oil. They also found vans, computers, loading equipment, packaging materials and labels claiming the oil was “extra-virgin” — even thought it clearly was not, CNN said.

Ya know, I was just looking for a quick link to post, didn’t want to link to amazon or wally world and didn’t read what I’d posted.
When I get home I’ll look at the bottle, an oil I’ve been using for over 10 years, and one of their bottles I still have as being refilled from the Kirkland bottles. The last time I looked it was NOT as described on that page.
I’ll update later...

Chlorophyll is any of several related green pigments found in cyanobacteria and in the chloroplasts of algae and plants.[2]
Good to know. That’s what I buy.
I use to use buy the large bottle which lasted me a looooong time.
Now I’ve learned why it’s in the green bottle
and once opened to use it up in so many days.
No way I can use it up at a teaspoon.
They would have sold it for that, so in that sense, it was worth that.
Some 80% of olive oil is fake, adulterated, rancis or just old. [Forbes]
Protect yourself as best you can.
Don’t buy blends or “Mediterranean” mixes. Olives need to be picked and crushed immediately. How do you bring olives from Spain to Italy and have a good result?
Look for estate bottles such as Partanna by Asaro from Sicily.
Price DOES matter. $10 a liter is not a good oil.
Look for certified bottles. DOP, COOC and others.
Lastly, thanks to Italy for trying.
Don’t mess with my evoo.
I buy California Olive Ranch Extra virgin from Publix. I think they sell two types. I always buy the one that has a little sticker on the bottle that says “California.”
*Are* there any virgins in California? /sarc>
My kin can be some truly wicked individuals. Your kin too. Humbling. Unfortunate. But we can always beat them to feel a little better, in theory.
