At least one person is dead after central Vermont was pummeled by severe flooding. The remnants of Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall in Texas Monday, unleashed torrential rain across the Northeast. Between two and six inches of rain fell, leaving some communities fighting against surging floodwaters.

Flood rapids wreaked havoc, prompting road closures and causing widespread damage. Plainfield officials say at least seven bridges were taken out. Residents of a six-unit apartment building had just 15 minutes to evacuate before the entire structure was swept away. One person died in the Peacham community, according to Vermont Governor Phil Scott.

What is it about the geography in VT that made the rains so devastating?

That much rain here in hilly N GA would be a heavy rain, but not destructive.

Sometimes hurricanes wreak more havoc once they move far inland and degrade into low-pressure systems. Camille killed 200 people in Virginia from floods.

maybe the storms ‘stall’ for a bit when in the mountains? Not sure, but seems like that could be possible

1927 was the big one. then 1938 hurricane, more recently, Gloria, Irene, etc.

A lot of VT, NH, ME is rocks filled in with dirt.

A lot of steep terrain funneling into valleys.

How come we never see such a hurricane come ashore when there is a drought on! They usually lose everything over Texas giving the rest of the drought stricken mid west -—NOTHING.

I remember a hurricane in the early 1970s went in around Mississippi-Alabama. Dumped so much rain floods were clear up into West Virginia causing lots of drownings. “I remember the shock when a news reporter shoved his microphone in a crying kid’s face and asked..”HOW DOES IT FEEL KNOWING YOUR PARENTS ARE DEAD!”

I saw a story about some Orlando, FL neighborhood where a neighbor claimed that two street drains and a pipe were recently put in her yard without permission. She warned the HOA what she would do if not removed. She ended up having concrete fill the drain.
Turns out that the drain had been there for years and....

The street has flooded for the 3rd time in the past few weeks where vehicles have to slow down as the water is several inches in places and also backs up into people’s yards.

She has now been ordered to repair the drain at her cost.
