No Fighting Yesterday Forenoon, Except Picket Firing-Rebels Reported to be in Middletown Valley-Gen. Wallace Reinforced-Business Resumed.
FREDERICK, Md., Friday, July 8 -- 2 P.M.
THE RAID. There has been no fighting to-day up to this time, except some picket firing by our skirmishers, who are feeling the position of the rebels. During last night they fell back from the line which they occupied during the fight, and are now reported to be in position in Middletown Valley, holding the road to Middletown and Hagerstown, which crosses the Catoctin Mountain. Two guns are mounted in the Gap. The rebel force is now estimated to be about 5,000 strong.
Gen. WALLACE has received reinforcements, whence and to what amount we leave the enemy to find out for themselves; but we may say that they consist of men who have been tried, know the work before them, and do not shrink from its performance. Frederick to-day is not like the Frederick of yesterday; since the arrival of Gen. LEW WALLACE, with his reinforcements, the appearance of the city is entirely changed. Business has been resumed, and the people seem confident that the danger has passed.
FREDERICK, Md., Friday, July 8 -- 1 P.M.
The rebels have retreated fully four miles from their position of yesterday, on the road to Boonesboro and Hagerstown.
Gen. WALLACE and Staff are actively engaged.
Everything looks well.
Frederick is in no danger.
One gun was captured by us yesterday.
The Eleventh Maryland one hundred day men have arrived here, and been enthusiastically received.
Our casualties may be summed up as follows:
Alexander's Battery -- Sergeant Charles C. Green, wounded.
First Regiment Potomac Home Guards -- J. Cunningham, wounded.
Third Regiment Potomac Home Guards -- Major H.C. Rizer, Charles H. Mason, J.W. Ball,
