Stupid and ignorant.
The cake line came from a novel of the time, so, yes, she never said it. The propaganda value of attributing it to her has been amply demonstrated though.
Regardless, nice job. :^)
As one of the French thinkers said, a despot has his good days, an assembly of despots, never.
Which President are you referring to?
Jefferson
Thanks. Yes, Jefferson did not have a very successful foreign policy, especially in his second term. But given the weakness of the United States, the resumption of the Napoleonic wars created a difficult situation for the US. I don’t know if any other President would have found a workable solution. British arrogance eventually provoked the War of 1812.
I meant in the 1790’s.
Yes, Jefferson was overly positive about the French Revolution (and about France generally).
The very early stages of the Revolution were widely applauded in the US and even by many people in England, but as the Revolution took a more radical course a lot of people turned against it—the September massacres, the execution of Louis XVI (Citizen Capet), the outbreak of war, the Reign of Terror, etc.
Different attitudes towards the French Revolution played a major role in the rise of the parties (Federalist and Republican) of the 1790s, with Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson at odds.
