The very early stages of the Revolution were widely applauded in the US and even by many people in England, but as the Revolution took a more radical course a lot of people turned against it—the September massacres, the execution of Louis XVI (Citizen Capet), the outbreak of war, the Reign of Terror, etc.
Different attitudes towards the French Revolution played a major role in the rise of the parties (Federalist and Republican) of the 1790s, with Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson at odds.
