The Tytler Cycle Suggests A Democracy Only Lasts 200 Years
Bear State Books ^ | 1776 | Alexander Fraser Tytler

Posted on 07/04/2024 8:48:28 AM PDT by patriot torch

“The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

While Alexander Fraser Tytler is often credited with these words, he also stated the following:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury.“

If only our government were actually governed as a Constitutional Republic we would not find ourselves in the shape we are today. But I digress.

“It may be more of a downward spiral than a “cycle”. It’s not like the Roman empire bounced back.”

It’s a cycle. Crests and troughs repeat like any other cycle. New up phase will have a different name and sometimes different location. Down phase will resemble other cultural disintegrations.

As our Founders were well aware. Another reason why they made us a REPUBLIC with a balance of power, and NOT a democracy.

Ayup... The top one there. That’s what I meant. Nailed it on the first try. Good job!

I didn’t know Mainers could only read one sentence. I thought they were smarter than Dems. Oh well. Good luck and enjoy the fireworks.

I have no problem with that requirement for voting—and I did not serve in the military.

The Founding Fathers also required property ownership as well. That would really help matters—make sure voters really had skin in the game.

I agree. I did not serve in the military either.

The Founding Fathers were wise. Obviously, it was effective.

Not sure how that is possible today. It appears to be elitist to require you to own property before you can vote?

I read the first line and you nailed it. Why go any further?

Because you got it wrong.

Again.

It’s fun to watch! And projection is quite a thing to observe.

Happy 4th anyway.

Ok.

Happy 4th to you as well. Remember, set it on the ground and light it then retreat to a safe distance.

DO NOT light it and hold it in your hand.

The instructions are on the back.

Have a good one.
