Brexit brings dire warnings for Trumpism
Yahoo Finance ^ | July 2, 2024 | Rick Newman

When Britain voted to exit the European Union in 2016, Donald Trump, then the Republican candidate for president, declared himself “Mr. Brexit.” Trump claimed solidarity with the nationalism, isolationism, and anti-immigrant fervor that drove Brexiteers and incorporated it into the America First platform he pursued after winning the 2016 presidential race.

Brits now view their populist experiment as a dismal failure. Champions of Brexit, such as former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, promised that severing political and economic integration with most of the rest of Europe would boost prosperity and self-sufficiency and leave more money for government services.

Instead, the UK economy has stagnated, with income and economic growth lower than it would have been otherwise. Those effects are likely to worsen through 2035. Most Brits now suffer “Bregret,” with polls in early June showing a record 69% of Brits thought Brexit turned out to be the wrong move. The fiasco is a major contributor to the collapse of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government — and the party’s likely shellacking in the upcoming July 4 election.

The author seems to ignore that the 'conservatives' will lose mostly to a party (Reform) led by the man who led Brexit and wants to better control net migration while the 'conservatives' failed horribly at illegal in migration control.

“the nationalism, isolationism, and anti-immigrant fervor that drove Brexiteers”

I sense a tiny bit of bias, here.

We had our moment with GWB.
It requires a very strong leader to make this work.

Illegal immigration is the problem!

None of us is against immigration, per se.

My parents were immigrants. My Dad’s family waited 15 years for their immigration visas.

My Mom had to wait 6 years.

They were thoroughly vetted, medically and politically, before being allowed to enter.

What we oppose is unchecked, unvetted, mass-migration via illegal entry.

That fact is NEVER mentioned by the Establishment Media.

The British “conservatives” were more like RINOs They failed to move to the “far right” so they were turned out.
As Europe is beginning to reject leftism the Brits are fed up with fake conservatives.

Brexit was doomed to fail when no limit on mass migration of alien population occurred. In fact, EU is doomed to fail for the same reason.

Perhaps Hungary will thrive.

I was making a distinction between inward migration vs immigration - the latter being formal legal entry and declared intent.

Brexit spectacularly failed because they couldn't compete against the unified economic power of the European Union.

Despite what a lot of people (include me) think of the EU, at least its member states operate under one set of regulations, which means anyone selling to the EU only need to pass regulations once. Realizing that goods trade is so important inside the EU, that's why multiple member EU states are spending a fortune on initiatives to improve trade, especially train transport (they're building two major tunnels for rail transport from Austria south and massively improving railways in Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia).

yes, it has trade advantages - i was only pointing out the oddity of claiming brexit was the reason ‘conservatives’ were losing when their electorate seems to be moving away from their failures and to the people who led brexit and want tighter border controls.

s/b Brexit brings dire warnings for Eurounionism or Trump brings dire warnings for pro-EUism.
After leading the Conservatives to outright majority -- a vote made possible by the prospects of Brexit -- Cameron repudiated the British voters by bailing out after the 2016 Brexit vote. A series of backroom deals to engineer a "Conservative" PM who would covertly undermine Brexit followed. Now the Tories are about to receive a pair of size twelves right in the seats of their pants, as a consequence of stabbing UK citizens in their backs.

“at least its member states operate under one set of regulations”

I have relatives who live (or have lived) in various EU countries and conducting business across borders does seem to be straightforward for them.

"Brits now view their populist experiment as a dismal failure.Brits now view their populist experiment as a dismal failure."

They would. These are the same people who allowed Henry VIII to create chaos in their lives and religion, in order to get a divorce to marry a woman he executed three years later. These are the same people who executed their King, and then 11 years later, begged his son to take back the throne. And these are the people who voted Winston Churchill out of office in the first election held after the war ended, and then voted him and Conservatives back in the next election. And even though some of my ancestors came from there, the British can be very arrogant and stupid.

I am a little confused here...the author says the movement is anti immigrant then associates the movement with a guy named Rishi Sunak?
