It is one of the strengths of our American culture that we know how to make everything bigger and better. It is one of the weaknesses of the American church that we apply this same mentality to our pastors and leaders. We know how to turn servants into superstars!

Celebrity pastor treatment begins with the reserved parking space. It just builds from there.
This morning I had to call a church pastor who I don’t know. His voice mail used his first name not Pastor x.
That tells me I’m probably going to like this guy.
I like my minister. He often admits to his own personal failings when preaching and is always having chats with people after the weekly service ends about what he just preached on and questions people have about it. That open access and humility go a long way in my mind to be a great help to the church he ministers to.
Yep.
How does that statement about the “American church” glorify God? The true church is made up of faithful believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.
You are generalizing beyond the truth of the church in God’s Word. The fact is that there are many unbelievers who have taken over literal churches (not the true church)who know how to turn servants into superstars.
I may be wrong, but I believe that a lot of this nonsense happens when young people feel the call and are made to go through seminary - so the can get licensed to preach the gospel.
Part of these courses make them learn “public speaking” techniques… show business. They use the SAME techniques as politicians. It’s really weird.
Back in the early 90’s I was a helper in youth group. One week, we had a guest speaker - I forget his name, but he was one of our young men who was just back from seminary after several years.
We KNEW this kid most of his life.
He used ALL the things he learned in seminary; he acted crazy and looked like a nutcase. It didn’t work for him. It was clearly an act - not the ‘Holy Spirit’ as they want to say.
I HAD been thinking of going into legitimate ministry at that time, but after that.. nope. It’s just another game.
Our senior pastor parks at the back of the high school parking lot that’s next door to the church every Sunday morning and walks to the church. He’s never mentioned it.
Decent speaking skills are a must for any preacher. I’ve been blessed to have had some great pastors who could draw you in, preach the gospel and focus on the one thing he wants you to learn and remember. I’ve had a couple of preachers that just reel off information. That’s just boring eventually.
He should have named some specific people.
But - they were signed up to go to some big event with the CEO of Duck Dynasty (Willie) and his wife and a bunch of other familiar names. Something like “Living your Best”. Promoted as Christian learning and praise, etc. down at the Tacoma Dome.
I looked it up and the reviews said it each speaker started off with a prayer and then just did a talk about how their investment program would help you to “live your best”. An all day sales thing! “And if you order today - you can get the $3,000 package for only $999. And our experts will help you get started RIGHT NOW!”
I was going to mention the details of the reviews but they were so gung-ho to go and weren't going to listen. So I just said “You should read some reviews before you drive all the way down there.”
They ended up spending the day together going to a movie and getting their nails done!
Exactly.
Really ?!
If he goes into his church office every weekday like ours does, of course he should have a reserved parking place. That is hardly a slippery slope. Usually there is one for the church secretary and custodian, as well, because they work there every day.
Great guy, great teacher, humble and godly. And funny!
I musta missed something.
Has something happened to suggest that celebrity pastors are going away!?!?
He says some good things. Is he surprised that people heap to themselves teachers?
Thanks!

I was talking about the parking space,
Really? the pastor should need to hunt around for one ?
I sets them on a pedestal.
He could have one right up front. He chooses to be a servant and let others have those spots.
