Special Dispatches to the New-York Times.

WASHINGTON, Thursday, June 30.

The announcement of the resignation of Secretary CHASE, this morning, produced quite as much surprise in Washington as it is understood to have caused in New-York, although there was no room here for the same incredulity with which it is reported the tidings were reserved in New-York. The startling event immediately became the subject of countless speculations and theories, both as to its causes and its probable consequences. Many of these were of the wildest and absurdest character, and without giving them any further currency. The true cause of the resignation of the Secretary of the Treasury is contained in the following simple statement, which I derive from indubitable authority. In the appointment of a successor to Mr. CISCO, Mr. CHASE took the ground in a letter addressed to the President, that for the satisfactory conduct of his department, he required the appointment of his own subordinates. The President replied dissenting from his view, and last night Mr. CHASE sent in his resignation. To-day the matter was taken [???] in Cabinet council, and the Secretary's retirement was accepted. That this was the immediate cause of Mr. CHASE's withdrawal is a matter of positive certainty, though there is no doubt it is but the consummation of a series of remote causes; and the step is one which it is believed Mr. CHASE has contemplated for a considerable time. Indeed, it is well-known fact that a day or two before the charges were preferred against the Secretary by Mr. FRANK BLAIR, Mr. CHASE wrote out his resignation, and Senator POMEROY had it in his pocket. But when the charges were brought forward, Mr. POMEROY urged that it would never do to tender it until the matter should be fully investigated,

Chase knew that the reunified USA would need a bank worthy of Reconstruction, so he left the government to become a financier. By 1867 he hooked up with Seward to finance the purchase of Alaska; it had been prophesied that Chase would be involved in this, so much so that his father named him after the famous Alaskan fish.

(FD: these are the kind of historical narratives I used to tell my daughter when she was in elementary school; as a result she learned never to trust her father’s intellect. Incidentally she just earned her BS in IT, we were in Detroit Saturday for the commencement, but back in FL now.)

“RESIGNATION OF SECRETARY CHASE (7/1/1864)”

He probably just needed some time off so he could pose for his portrait on the new ten-thousand dollar bill.
