Tar-Atanamir, thirteenth King of Numenor (who does THIS sound like?)

Tar-Atanamir (pron. [aˈtanamir]) was the thirteenth King of Númenor.

Tar-Atanamir succeeded his father, Tar-Ciryatan, and ruled for 192 years, from S.A. 2029 until his death, being the first King to rule for life since Tar-Minyatur.

He was proud and greedy like his father. During his reign the Númenóreans exacted heavy tributes from the men of the coasts of Middle-earth. In his time the Shadow fell upon Númenor and the king and those that followed his opinion spoke openly against the ban that forbade them to sail to Tol Eressea and Aman and the mortality of Men, but they still kept their wisdom and feared and did not defy the Valar. It was then when the people started being divided into the King's Men and the Faithful.

During his reign the Eldar reported to the Valar that the Númenóreans were beginning to speak against the Ban of the Valar. Aggrieved, Manwë sent messengers to Tar-Atanamir. They explained that even if the Númenóreans could find the way to Aman it would not undo their doom. Tar-Atanamir brought up the matter of his ancestor Eärendil who still lived in the sky, but according to the messengers his was a fate apart. Atanamir was unsatisfied that he and his people must abide the will of Eru.

He was known as "the Great", and also "the Unwilling", because he was the first King of Númenor that refused to give up his life and the Sceptre of Númenor to his heir. He lived on into old age and senility. Thus he begun a new tradition as every of his successors did not relinquish his reign until death.

Tolkien had a very deep understanding of the fear of death and clinging to power "beyond all joy."

Biden would be wise to leave office in peace. But he won't. He'll hold onto it long past his due date. And like Tar-Atanamir, will be a senile demented wreck of a man soiling his undergarments as he sits on "the throne".

My namesake Kiryandil was one of The Faithful.

If God ever blessed me with children and one of them is a girl, I decided a long time ago that I would name her Eowyn.

Once I read a column that noted how politicians who become senators, representatives, governors and big-city mayors have 14 years to get elected as president or vice-president, before people get tired of having them around. For Biden, that “due date” passed in 1986, two years before his first presidential run.

That’s an interesting study. I got approached by one of the two major parties years ago, to consider running for a House seat. I studied what it would take to mount that kind of campaign (I had already run for local office) and in the end decided it wasn’t for me. For one thing it takes a small army of attorneys to make sure you are adhering to all the campaign laws. But mostly I did NOT want that kind of power to turn me into something I wasn’t meant to be. There should definitely be term limits, four at most in the House and two in the Senate. Serving in office should be a sacred trust, not a lifetime career.

When he croaks, which could be any minute now, his body will be 'accidentally' cremated.
